EDUCATION NEWS

  • Winona ISD welcomed students back to class last Tuesday under new Superintendent Justin Cowart—who aims to boost enrollment by about 50 students, increase extracurricular involvement, and improve testing scores. Cowart also said he plans to raise the district's accountability rating from a ‘C’ to a ‘B’ by next year.  KETK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas House will vote today on a redistricting plan that reduces District 1 from 17 counties to 12, which means Rep. Nathaniel Moran will no longer represent Morris, Titus, Franklin, Camp, and Upshur counties but will add Cherokee and Nacogdoches counties— a move seen as key for GOP control ahead of the 2026 midterm.  Longview News-Journal
  • Voters in Spring Hill ISD will choose whether to raise property taxes and approve three bond plans for school repairs, stadium upgrades, and tennis court improvements on Nov. 4. The measures aim to add $304,590 in new funds and a total of $20 million to help cover rising costs — a move to support teacher raises and better facilities.  Longview News-Journal
  • Gregg County officials approved a contract amendment on Tuesday, August 19 to add nearly $480,000 for more training on the new Workday software that will replace a thirty-year-old system used in most county operations. The payroll feature will launch on December 21 while other parts go live by October 1 — keeping the project under the $3.5 million budget.  Longview News-Journal

  • Longview Regional Medical Center has named East Texas native Patrick Swindle as its new chief executive officer, and he will begin his role on Sept. 30. Swindle led Seton Medical Center Harker Heights and brings strong leadership to support high-quality patient care.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Spring Hill’s Elizabeth Corbitt was named Player of the Week after she recorded 107 kills in 11 matches to help her Lady Panthers reach a 9-2 record from Aug. 11-16. She started the season with 12 kills in a win over Pleasant Grove and added 17 kills at rival White Oak — her performance set a strong tone for the opening week.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Tuesday at Eagle Coliseum, the Tatum Lady Eagles beat the Pine Tree Lady Pirates 3—2 in a five-set match with scores of 25—19, 25—22, 21—25, 25—27, 15—13. Star player Taydem Barker led Tatum with 49 assists and 18 digs while Kaysen Foster and Camdyn Scott added 52 kills to secure the win.  Longview News-Journal
