COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Louis A. Smiley, a World War I sailor from Marshall who was lost at sea with the USS Cyclops in 1918, was honored with a new military headstone placed at Algoma Cemetery next to his mother and sister’s graves during a Saturday ceremony.  Longview News-Journal
  • Longview’s High Street elevated water tower was named one of the top 12 finalists in the 2025 Tnemec Tank of the Year contest when results were announced on October 24th. Hayes Engineering nominated the tower and public voting earlier this fall supported its recognition for innovation and community pride.  City of Longview

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Longview’s new 66,000 square foot FRESH by Brookshire’s opened Wednesday at North Fourth Street and North Eastman Road to a busy crowd and now employs about 250 people. The store received a $1.5-million boost from the local Economic Development Corp to upgrade its 10-acre site—officials say it will enhance community shopping.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Longview ISD began building three new school facilities after voters approved a $456,000,000 bond (2024) and held a groundbreaking ceremony last Thursday. The new buildings include a multipurpose facility, a natatorium and a career and technology center that will let students run services and gain skills, and work is expected to finish by 2027 (after permits are secured).  KETK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The government shutdown ended Wednesday, but the East Texas Food Bank expects its effects to last about two months after spending $600,000 during a 43-day period to meet rising food needs. SNAP funding is secured until next September for 3.5 million Texans, and the food bank is preparing to rebuild its disaster resources.  KETK
  • Lindale ISD Superintendent Stan Surratt on Thursday warned that Gov. Abbott’s plan to end property taxes for public schools does not offer a clear way to fund schools going forward. He criticized the two-thirds vote rule for bond approval as undemocratic—raising concerns for students and local community resources.  KETK
  • ETCOG opened a new GoBus maintenance facility in Kilgore on Thursday behind its headquarters at 3800 Stone Road—this $3.3 million center houses two work bays, a wash bay, training rooms and extra parking for the 14-county transit program—improving vehicle maintenance and safety.   KETK

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nine East Texas hospitals were given an A rating for Fall 2025 by the Leapfrog Group—four fewer than last Fall’s 13—and Longview Regional Medical Center earned five A ratings since Spring 2023—its CEO said the rating reflects the team’s dedication to safe, high-quality care.  KETK

SPORTS NEWS

  • Overton quarterback Ryelan Holleman was named a Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Player of the Week for Week 11 after a strong 42-8 win over Cushing on November 13. He passed for 218 yards with 2 touchdowns, rushed for 100 yards with 2 scores and returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown—boosting his team’s postseason chances.  Longview News-Journal
  • In its first year in the conference, the YellowJackets earned a spot in the SCAC Tournament and will face the Schreiner Mountaineers today at 1 p.m. at the Schreiner University Athletic and Events Center—the winner will play Hendrix at 6 p.m.  Longview News-Journal
  • Final regular season stats for ET Football were released. They list top rushers such as K. Ash with 2,863 yards and top passers like J. Garrett with 2,717 yards—along with leaders in receiving, tackles, sacks, interceptions, and fumble recoveries.  Longview News-Journal
  • Longview and Rowlett, both 6-4, will begin their playoff match today at 7 p.m. at Homer B. Johnson Stadium in Garland—neither team has yet won a postseason game and both look to break past past struggles.  Longview News-Journal
