  • On Saturday, East Texans honored veterans and military family members at a Veterans Day celebration at the American Freedom Museum in Bullard—featuring a 21-gun salute, flag presentations and recognition of World War II veterans while the Dwyer family marked two years since Chief Warrant Officer 3 Stephen R. Dwyer died in a helicopter crash.  KETK
  • East Texas CASA thanked dozens of volunteers who help children in the child welfare system at a banquet in Longview yesterday — the group said it needs 35 more volunteers in the next two days. The banquet featured a speech by Dr. John Gaines that honored the work of court-appointed advocates who guide children in tough times — organizers hope more community members will join soon.  Longview News-Journal

  • Cole Tomberlain, president of Tomberlain Insurance Group, was unanimously elected chair elect of the UT Chancellor’s Centurions Board, making him the first Stephen F. Austin representative selected for the role. Business updates also include TxDOT naming Katie Martin as Atlanta district engineer, AAON promoting Roberto Giacomelli to senior vice president of operations, and new team members were added at Henry & Peters and the American Angus Association—Colby Siglin and Laney Cotton.  Longview News-Journal

  • The Tyler Morning Telegraph and Longview News-Journal showcased reader-submitted photos in their Best Shots collection from Oct. 31-Nov. 6 and invite local readers to email submissions with the photographer’s full name and a photo description for a chance to be featured in future editions — the series spotlights local talent.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Big Sandy ISD will use over $350,000 in federal funds to replace old security cameras and intercom systems with new equipment designed to keep students safe—features include flashing lights for hearing-impaired students and digital clocks that display lockdown alerts. The installation will take place during a school break to avoid any classroom disruption.  Longview News-Journal

  • Gardening columnist Neil advised a reader to trim a leggy golden pothos by cutting its shoots and rooting them in water to grow new plants.   • Saturday’s game at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium saw Northeastern Oklahoma beat Kilgore College 65-48 in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference+ Kilgore ended its season at 4-5 while NEO improved to 5-4 and will host a playoff game next week.  Kilgore News Herald
