COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Longview Arboretum and Nature Center will host several fall events that include the final Music in the Gardens concert on Oct. 30, the Pilar McLemore Butterfly Run on Nov. 1, a garden care lunch and learn on Nov. 21 plus a new holiday light show starting on Nov. 28. Executive director Claire Bissell said the events will help people learn about nature and support community celebration.  Longview News-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Longview’s Wildwood subdivision shows off creative skeleton displays this Halloween season—featuring a recreation of the OK Corral gunfight, a skeleton birthday party, and games like soccer and cornhole that delight visitors.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bullard high school senior Colin Scarborough earned Commended Student status in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program after scoring among the top test-takers on the 2024 exam. He will receive a Letter of Commendation for his academic achievement (a distinction awarded to only 34,000 students nationwide) as Bullard High School Principal Chad Bentley praised his hard work.  KETK
  • St. Mary’s Catholic School dedicated its new outdoor classroom on October 22 with a ribbon-cutting and blessing after a prayer service honoring St. John Paul II—this project is part of a three-year plan to bring classical learning outdoors and limit technology in the classroom.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longview Economic Development Corp. had a busy 2024-25 year when CEO Wayne Mansfield told the board in August that the agency hosted seven site visits and managed 29 open projects and nine active projects amid political chaos in Austin and Washington, D.C. The agency has brought 4,000 jobs and secured $500 million in capital investments that add a net impact of $162 million to the city through projects such as new business facilities and land acquisition for a third business park.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Spring Hill Lady Panthers ended district play with a perfect 14-0 record in a win over Pine Tree—led by strong play from Elizabeth Corbitt—while the Tatum Lady Eagles swept Arp to mark head coach Leven Barker’s 100th district win. Other teams like Hallsville, Lufkin, White Oak, New Diana, Beckville, Bullard and Mineola also won their matches as they wrapped up the regular season.  Longview News-Journal
  • East Texas Baptist University inducted four individuals today during Homecoming Weekend—former Pine Tree standout soccer players Janna Wilson Graham and Aaron Erickson, baseball player Josiah Jones, and athletic trainer Jace Duke—in a ceremony held in Marshall. The event recognized their significant contributions to ETBU Athletics over the years.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Friday night, the Hallsville Bobcats beat the Whitehouse Wildcats 13-6 at Wildcat Stadium. The Bobcats scored all of their points in the second half — with Ka’Trevion Muckelroy recovering key fumbles — to seal the win.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Thursday night, Kayson Brooks scored five touchdowns in Kilgore's 55 to 3 win over Palestine — he threw three touchdown passes and made key runs while Rayshaun Williams carried 16 times for 186 yards and two scores. Kilgore is now 8 to 1, clinched its third district title in a row, and will have a bye week before finishing district play on Nov. 6.  Longview News-Journal
  • On October 24th, the Carthage Bulldogs beat Bullard 62-7 in a District 8 4A Division II football game. Quarterback Jett Surratt threw all 14 of his passes for 232 yards and four touchdowns while KJ Edwards rushed for 144 yards and three scores—extending the Bulldogs' district win streak to 50 games.  Longview News-Journal
  • East Texas residents are preparing for the general whitetail deer season on November 1 as many plan to hunt in local forests and other areas while following varying county rules. Hunters in the North Zone should secure permits, ammo, and supplies—like water and a first aid kit—to be ready for a safe trip.  Longview News-Journal
  • Longview Lobos defeated Rockwall-Heath Hawks 31-7 on Friday as quarterback Johnny Hamilton passed for 270 yards and two touchdowns—keeping district title hopes alive. The Lobos opened with four quick scores and held Heath scoreless in the second half.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Spring Hill Panthers won 65-23 against North Lamar at Panther Stadium Friday night, keeping playoff hopes alive as Coleman Stout rushed for 198 yards and scored five touchdowns—Brody Proctor threw for 238 yards with two touchdowns. The win improved Spring Hill to 2-6 while North Lamar dropped to 0-8.  Longview News-Journal
