COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Longview combat veteran, Henry Ham II, received a service dog (Trip) from Rusk County Pets Alive’s Second Chance Initiative that pairs inmates with shelter dogs for training, and a motorcycle motorcade of combat veterans supported the event. This program works with the Henderson Animal Center and local correctional facilities to help disabled veterans.  KETK

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mary Caroline McHaney, a Longview native and daughter of Stephen and Amy McHaney, was named Duchess of Longview at the Texas Rose Festival in Tyler—she is an Auburn University student who wore an 'Alice in Wonderland' themed gown by designer Jacob A. Climer—continuing her family's long legacy in the festival.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kilgore College will host Greater East Texas College Night at the Longview Exhibit Center on November 4th — local and out-of-state college recruiters will offer information to residents looking to further their education.  City of Longview
  • The library will host a Dungeons & Dragons Universe-ity Teen Hangout for teens ages 13 to 17 on October 25 from 2:00 PM to 4:45 PM (free event) where a teen intern and youth services staff will lead a beginner’s campaign to help players create character sheets and learn the game.  City of Longview

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Keep Longview Beautiful’s 14th annual litter survey shows Longview is cleaner with a score of 1.48—marking the largest improvement in two years. The survey covered 60 sites and reflected strong local efforts, as 30 community organizations and 277 volunteer hours helped remove litter since the campaign began in May.  City of Longview

  • In a column published last night, Barbara Richardson McClellan recalled her longtime wish to visit Stonehenge, The Pieta, and the Sydney Opera House—she also described meeting an Australian orchestra conductor and shared a detailed easy lasagna recipe.  Longview News-Journal

  • Realtors in Longview say the housing market is shifting to a steady, strategic pace as high interest rates, rising property taxes and insurance costs slow activity.   • The bEASTTexas Fabulous 15 Poll for high school football was published Tuesday and shows Carthage ranked first at 7-0 while Longview is seventh at 4-3—votes were cast by sports reporters from local and regional news outlets including the Longview News-Journal.  Longview News-Journal
  • Pine Tree’s Aiden Smith earned Defensive Player of the Week with 10 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery as the Pirates beat Henderson 49-21—while Daingerfield’s Isaiah Parker and Reign Wallace shared Offensive Player of the Week honors with record-setting passing and receiving numbers in their win over Hooks.  Longview News-Journal
  • Kilgore — holding a 7-1 record — will host Palestine, which stands at 0-7, at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Kilgore will look to extend its seven-game winning streak since its season opener loss on Aug. 29 with key players like Kayson Brooks leading the charge.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Chloe Green led the New Diana Lady Eagles and earned Volleyball Player of the Week by scoring 23 kills, 21 digs and six aces in games from Oct. 13 to 18. The wins improved the team record to 22 to 16 overall and 8 to 0 in district play before their final match on Friday at Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill.  Longview News-Journal
  • Two East Texas volleyball players received the Female Athlete of the Month award from Greater Texas Ford Dealers for September. West Rusk’s Hannah Haffner and Gilmer’s Jayna Rucker were recognized for their strong on-court play—Haffner for her high kills and blocks along with academic success and Rucker for breaking school softball records and leading in kills—and their achievements now put them in the running for Female Athlete of the Year.  Longview News-Journal
  • Pine Tree swept Cumberland Academy on Tuesday at The Pirate Center with scores of 25-8, 25-12, 25-11. The Lady Pirates improved their record to 27-13 — winning four straight sweeps as they prepare for the playoffs.  Longview News-Journal
  • Local high school football teams in Week 8 played hard with strong scoring from passers and rushers, as Kilgore's Kayson Brooks and Longview's Johnny Hamilton made big plays in wins. The games, with scores from 33-6 to 76-59, highlighted a busy week full of competitive talent — showing promising athletic skill across our region.  Kilgore News Herald
