COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A state marker for the 1919 race riot was unveiled outside the courthouse on Monday, October 20 by the 1919 Remembrance Project after years of work to document Longview’s past—its placement marks a significant step in remembering a dark chapter of local history.  Longview News-Journal
  • A local veteran, retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Henry Ham II, received his first service dog from Rusk County Pets Alive’s Fletcher Project on Saturday morning at Teague Park Veterans Plaza. The dog named Trip was trained by inmate trainers at Billy Moore Correctional Center and became the first service dog approved to live and work on Barksdale Air Force Base—marking a milestone for the program.  Kilgore News Herald

  • Austin and Connor Reich run Reich Builders—continuing their father's 30-year legacy by building custom homes, retail centers, and townhomes in Longview. The brothers keep strong values by treating clients and workers fairly and are taking on more work as interest in housing grows.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six East Texas school districts are hosting bond elections in November to fund school repairs, new classrooms, and other facility updates. Early voting runs from Oct. 20 to Oct. 31 + Election Day is Nov. 4, giving voters the chance to choose proposals that help maintain safe and updated campuses.  KETK
  • The Kilgore College Board of Trustees voted on Monday to name Dr. Staci Pollan Martin as interim president—she will take office on Nov. 1 as current President Dr. Brenda Kays retires in February. The board has contracted a search for a permanent leader expected to begin in June or July.  KETK

SPORTS NEWS

  • Leverett’s Chapel defeated Savoy 70—24 on Friday as David Salazar returned the kickoff for a touchdown while Christus Smith rushed for 254 yards, putting the team at a record of one win and one loss in District 10-1A. White Oak edged Sabine 41—34 as Jaxsen Ludlow rushed for 178 yards and passed for scores, leaving White Oak with a record of one win and two losses in District 8-3A.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Following Monday's release of the NJCAA preseason poll, the Kilgore College women will open the season ranked No. 8 after a 24 to 10 season that led them to the national tournament for the first time in 32 years. The men's team, which finished last season at 15 to 17, will begin at No. 25 — aiming to improve their performance this year.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Longview News-Journal released high school football polls on Monday, October 20 with rankings across several divisions—Class 6A has SL Carroll at 8-0 while other classes show top teams preparing for upcoming games. The published polls will help fans track team progress as the season unfolds.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Kilgore College Rangers lost 30 to 14 to Trinity Valley on Saturday at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium, which made their record 2 wins and 4 losses while Trinity Valley now has 6 wins and 1 loss—Kilgore will host Tyler at 1 p.m. on Saturday. In softball, the team lost 20 to 3 to Louisiana-Monroe on Friday with Briana Theus hitting a key home run, and they will visit East Texas A&M today at 5 p.m.  Longview News-Journal
  • LeTourneau volleyball swept the Ozarks Eagles 3-0 in Mabee Gymnasium Saturday—setting a program record with 50 kills as Emma Smith led with 13—while the women's soccer team closed their home season with a 1-0 win over Dallas after Reagan Parks scored in the 50th minute. The men's soccer team lost 1-0 at Colorado College on Sunday after Jack Hilliard's goal and will face Ozarks on Friday at 7:30 p.m.  Longview News-Journal
  • UIL denied Lindale High School senior Cooper Whiteus’s appeal Monday morning—ruling him ineligible for athletics for the 2025-26 school year. The tied 3-3 decision follows his family’s move to Lindale to be closer to relatives rather than for sports reasons.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Kilgore College women’s basketball team enters the season ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA polls after finishing a 24—10 season that brought them to their first NJCAA National Tournament in 32 years, while the men’s team starts at No. 25 following a season of close games under coach Robert Byrd. The women will open on Nov. 1 and the men on Oct. 31, as both teams look to build on last season’s efforts with key returning players.  Kilgore News Herald
