COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Longview High School's Lobo Choir will honor Vietnam War veterans on Oct. 25 at the school by presenting medals for the 50th anniversary of the war’s end and serving free turkey legs, chips, and drinks to veterans—public attendees pay $20 for the meal as part of a fundraiser. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the student parking lot and will also include choral performances, speakers, and family activities like bounce houses and face-painting.  Longview News-Journal
  • Young hunters are set to begin their first deer hunting experience as the Texas Special Youth Deer Season opens on Oct 24 in East Texas — a chance for kids to learn safe hunting in a fun, learning-focused environment. Parents and wildlife officials say the three-day season will focus on safety while making nature a part of family time.  Longview News-Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Longview's former Putt-Putt Golf and Games will reopen as Tapshot by spring under new Marshall owners Robert Parkison and Jerad Perry who will update the miniature golf course while keeping its classic animal statues. A new Tango Mango Chinese restaurant is planned in Spring Hill and Longview City has approved local residents Ashly and Keith Lloyd to build a self-service dog wash station — a project that will cost $2,400 a year and include donations to the Animal Care and Adoption Center.  Longview News-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pumpkin season is here across East Texas as local farms, churches and community groups open pumpkin patches and host fall festivals, hayrides, corn mazes and safe trick-or-treat events for families from Mineola to Longview. The events run through November with free or low-cost entry—giving residents many options to enjoy seasonal treats and local traditions.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UT Tyler partnered with Overton ISD on October 17th to offer discounted tuition for district employees pursuing advanced degrees online—this effort aimed to ease the teacher shortage and strengthen local education.  Kilgore News Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • CHRISTUS Health in Longview will host a Halloween event on Oct 30—offering trick-or-treating, games, prizes, face painting and balloon twisting in a safe environment with local police, fire, and EMS present. Families can look forward to enjoying traditional Halloween activities in a secure setting.  KETK
  • Longview resident Rhonda Roberts organized a kickball tournament at Hinsley Park on Tuesday through her nonprofit Alopecia Awareness & Wellness — a fundraiser to help people with alopecia get low-cost wigs and feel good about themselves. The event, held with Special Olympics of Texas, brought community members, police officers, firefighters, and students with special needs together to support the cause.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The top-ranked Carthage Bulldogs beat Athens 61-56 in a close District 8-4A game at Bulldog Stadium on Friday—Jett Surratt threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns while KJ Edwards added 229 yards and three scores to secure the win.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Friday, Johnny Hamilton led the Lobos to a 63-20 win over Legacy—he threw for 306 yards and scored three touchdowns as his team improved to a 4-3 record in 10-6A play.  Longview News-Journal
  • Today Kilgore College will host TVCC at 1 p.m. at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium with Kilgore (2-3, 0-3) looking to break their losing streak while TVCC (5-1, 3-1) aims to extend its winning run. This game marks the 109th meeting between the teams, with Kilgore holding a 55-50-3 advantage.  Longview News-Journal
  • Kilgore beat Lindale 49-29 at Eagle Stadium on Friday night—Lakeyleon Graves made key plays—and the Bulldogs will host Palestine on Oct. 24 while Lindale travels to Mabank.  Longview News-Journal
  • HENDERSON — The Pine Tree Pirates defeated the Henderson Lions 49 to 21 in a key district game Friday with a balanced offense and crucial defensive stops. Quarterback Colton Croft passed for 238 yards while running backs Roger Attaway and Ja’Karius Timmons each rushed for over 80 yards — the Pirates will host Chapel Hill next week as the Lions have a bye.  Longview News-Journal
