CRIME NEWS

  • Lt. Mark Wynn, a longtime law enforcement officer who survived a traumatic childhood, spoke at the domestic violence awareness seminar at Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center in Longview as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (he detailed his personal experiences and urged men to help break the cycle of abuse).  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UT Tyler has partnered with Overton ISD to offer district employees discounted tuition for advanced degrees and an accelerated master’s in educational leadership—an effort that will help address the teacher shortage in the area.  KETK
  • Wills Point ISD will use a $69 million bond to renovate and expand every school—adding new classrooms, more CTE and Ag Science space, and improved security—while preparing for over 1,000 new students in the next decade. Early voting begins Oct. 20 and ends Oct. 31, with the bond election set for Nov. 4.  KETK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Longview Housing Authority announced it will reopen its Housing Choice Voucher waitlist from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on November 6 to allow more families to apply — it will also provide computer lab help at the Longview Public Library from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and host a training session for nonprofit leaders on October 22 at Noon.  City of Longview

SPORTS NEWS

  • Texas Tech running back Cameron Dickey earned the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week after running 263 yards and scoring two long touchdowns in a 42-17 win over Kansas—he set a career high with 21 carries and posted the season's highest single-game rushing total among FBS players.  Longview News-Journal
  • At Tyler Junior College media day, coaches picked defending regional champion Kilgore College as the women’s champion—receiving 59 points over Trinity Valley’s 55. In the men’s poll, Trinity Valley was favored with 11 of 12 first-place votes and 132 total points while Angelina was named second.  Longview News-Journal
  • LeTourneau’s men’s golf team finished 10th at the Golfweek October Classic held at Raven Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla., after moving up two spots in the final round—its women’s team ended 17th with a 36‐hole score of 973 at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.  Longview News-Journal
  • Six high school football players received Built Ford Tough Player of the Week honors for Week 7, with four quarterbacks from Duncanville, Tivy, Seminole and Dimmitt + two players from 2A and private schools recognized for on-field and off-field achievements in wins over their rivals.  Longview News-Journal
