COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Oct. 17, 18 and 19, vendors will set up booths along U.S. 80 for the bi-annual Hiway 80 Sale, an event started in 2002 to bring shoppers into small East Texas towns. Mary Ramos now maintains the sale on Facebook + continues the legacy of founder Howard Rosser as buyers hunt for treasures along the highway.  Longview News-Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • CenterPoint Energy will begin building a nearly $23.5 million gas service and training center at 5139 Tryon Road in December. The new 37,250-square-foot facility will replace its leased location and train 391 workers to boost service response times—Budget Blinds is expanding with a new acquisition, the city approved the B. Franklin Martin House as a Local Historical Landmark, and a permit was granted for The Plain Bar in Longview Mall to open in spring or early summer.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Longview High School Class of '57 held a reunion on Oct. 4 at Papacita’s Mexican Village where over 20 alumni gathered to celebrate 68 years of friendship—though some did not attend—and they plan another reunion in October 2026.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Longview announced a new recycling collection schedule that will start Monday, November 3 to reduce contamination and improve efficiency. Residents will put out blue-lid carts for recycling the day after their trash day or on trash day if extra waste is placed—guidelines include an expanded list of accepted materials for recycling.  City of Longview

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Kilgore varsity cross country team—along with runners Airy Grajales and Arleth Castillo—qualified for the 4A Region 2 championship meet in Arlington after finishing third in the District 16-4A championships at Lear Park last Thursday. They will compete later this month at the Harold Patterson Sports Complex as they advance in the regionals.  Kilgore News Herald
  • The Forney Jackrabbits rallied to secure their first win over the Longview Lobos, defeating them 28-24 on Friday at Lobo Stadium+ Forney erased a 10-point deficit in the third quarter and stopped Longview three times on fourth down, dropping Longview to a 3-3 overall record while Forney improved to 5-2 in district play.  Longview News-Journal
  • Daingerfield scored 82—14 on Friday as the Tigers, led by Isaiah Parker with six touchdown passes, improved to 4—3 overall and 3—0 in district play. Frankston beat Mildred 32—6 on Thursday night with key plays from Carson Bizzell and Michael Bryant and will play at Kerens next week while Mildred faces Cayuga.  Longview News-Journal
  • Carthage defeated Center 60-14 in the District 8 4A Division II opener — senior quarterback Jett Surratt threw for a season-high 328 yards and six touchdowns. The Bulldogs will return home to face Athens — their key district test scheduled for 7:30 p.m. next Friday.  Longview News-Journal
  • Van’s senior running back Da’Quavion Williams scored five touchdowns and gathered 261 yards Friday to help the Vandals beat the Panthers 49-26 at Panther Stadium — the Vandals made 26 first downs without punting while the Panthers turned the ball over twice.  Longview News-Journal
  • Kilgore College softball team lost 10 to 2 and 8 to 1 to UT Tyler on Thursday — they recorded only six hits in one game. The team will face Louisiana-Monroe on Friday, Oct. 17 — a contest in their fall schedule.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Kilgore Lady Bulldogs beat Cumberland Academy in four sets with Elle Litchenburg leading with five kills, 25 digs, 28 assists and seven aces. The Sabine Lady Cardinals swept Arp 25-18, 25-12, 26-24 with strong plays by Keeley McCann and Sarah Roberts + team support.  Kilgore News Herald
