COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The East Texas Literacy Council opened a resource closet in Longview that offers clothes—shoes and supplies to help students and community members be ready for jobs or college; the closet accepts donations and is open Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  KETK
  • On Tuesday night, families, neighbors, and community officials gathered in Longview for National Night Out to enjoy bounce houses, hot dogs, dancing, and discussions with police—nonprofits and school leaders also shared details on voter-approval tax rates and bond proposals.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longview City officials confirmed a new 2,000 square-foot pavilion will be added to the Maude Cobb Convention Center to improve rental offerings—construction will begin in October and take about three months, with access to a kitchenette and bathrooms available through the Eitelman Conference Room. This project aims to upgrade the center for both standalone and combined rentals.  KETK

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, high school football rankings showed little change as Pittsburg moved from No. 14 to No. 13 and Henderson dropped to No. 14 in the Class 6A/5A/4A poll while West Rusk joined the Class 3A/2A/TAPPS poll at No. 15—voters kept other positions steady.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Elizabeth Corbitt from Spring Hill was named the Longview News-Journal Volleyball Player of the Week after she reached 1,000 career kills and recorded 34 kills, three blocks, 13 digs and an ace in matches that kept her team unbeaten in District 16-4A play—her strong play led the Lady Panthers to wins over Pine Tree and Henderson.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Longview High School tennis team opened Class 6A playoffs with a 10 to 2 win over Wylie East on Monday. The Lobos have reached the playoffs 16 years in a row and won nine straight bi-district matches — they will face an unknown opponent at 2 p.m. on Thursday in Rockwall — keeping their winning streak alive.  Longview News-Journal
  • Tatum varsity boys and West Rusk varsity girls won the District 16-3A cross country championships at Union Grove High School on Saturday. Victor Cantellano ran the boys 5k in 16:56.81 and Sadie Loftis set a new record in the girls 3.2k run at 11:51.64—teams that qualified for the UIL Region 2 Championship on Oct. 20-21 at Arlington's Harold Patterson Sports Complex.  Longview News-Journal
  • Carthage’s Jett Surratt and Kilgore’s LaKeyleon Graves were named Players of the Week for strong Week 6 football performances—Surratt threw 11 of 17 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-3 win while Graves made 16 tackles and an interception in a 27-12 win.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, a regional poll ranked high school sports teams in the #bEASTTEXAS Fabulous 15, and Longview finished 7th with a 3-2 record—voters from local outlets also ranked Carthage at the top of the 6A/5A/4A group and Westwood leading the 3A/2A/TAPPS category. This poll involved local media figures who contributed their assessment of the teams.  Longview News-Journal
