  • Families from across East Texas joined the annual East Texas Down Syndrome Group Walk at Breckenridge Village of Tyler on Saturday to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome and raise awareness of available support—Board President Tara McHam said the event promoted inclusion and connected families with needed medical and education resources.  Longview News-Journal
  • BBB is promoting National Cyber Security Awareness Month and now offers advice for local residents to strengthen online safety during a time when devices and data face constant threats—tips include cautious use of public WiFi, secure password practices, and careful clicking on unverified links. The resource is meant to help both home users and local business leaders protect their information.  Kilgore News Herald
  • The Smith County Animal Shelter operated with limited staff on Friday and asked community members to call 9032664303 to schedule an adoption appointment for one of 19 available dogs including puppies—this came as the shelter and the Fire Marshal worked together to care for 65 animals amid emergency dog calls.  KETK

CULTURE NEWS

  • Longview will host The Thorn theatrical event at the Belcher Center on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15 in February 2026 as part of its nationwide tour. Created by John Bolin, the show will combine drama, music, dance, martial arts and aerial acrobatics to depict the story of Jesus from creation to the early church.  KETK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Longview ISD honored three graduates as its 2025 Distinguished Alumni at the State of the District luncheon for their achievements and public service. Kenneth C. Raney Jr., Dr. Stevie (Dr. View) Johnson and Rhonda Glass Bullard were recognized for their career success and community work.  Longview News-Journal
  • Emilio M., a senior at Trinity School in Longview, was named a NASA Texas High School Aerospace Scholar after his school and State Representative Jay Dean nominated him from over 800 students. He finished a 16-week online STEM course and will join a summer program to work with NASA experts as his team plans a mission to the moon and mars — a rare honor for a local student.  KETK

  • During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Hollie Bruce of the Women’s Center of East Texas explains that abuse can be more than physical and that help is available for those feeling isolated or controlled. The center will host the 'Too Close to Home' seminar on Oct. 14 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center in Longview—free to all.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Kilgore College Rangers defeated the Community Christian College Spartans 55-0 at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium by attacking through the air early and on the ground later—snapping a three-game losing streak. The team will resume play after their bye with a home game against Trinity Valley Community College at 1 p.m. on Oct. 18 as they complete their season with four conference contests.  Longview News-Journal
  • Four Longview Lobos players shined in their 35-21 win over Rockwall as Johnny Hamilton completed 6 of 10 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown — also rushing for 43 yards and another touchdown — while Jaden Hurndon caught four passes for 145 yards with a touchdown, and Lawson Tubb and Jessier Hampton-Williams made key defensive stops. Their strong performances boosted the team’s record and set the stage for upcoming games.  Longview News-Journal
