BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown Longview got sweeter when Roxy’s Candy Lounge opened Friday at 101 N. Center St, with 20% of sales funding Roxy Rooms that help students on the autism spectrum and sweets made in-house or sourced locally. Taylor Kelly runs the shop—meanwhile, a new mall bar now awaits City Council approval and a $1.5 million McDonald’s in Spring Hill will start construction in January and finish by May.  Longview News-Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Longview area remained dry with a below-normal chance of rain through October 17 and no countywide burn bans, while local firefighters responded to outdoor fires on Spring Hill Road and Nottingham Road yesterday. County official Bill Stoudt advised residents to keep a water supply nearby when burning outdoors.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A caller asked about what is happening at the Loop and PT Parkway corner near two schools, and City Planner Angela Choy said the property owners are harvesting timber—no other development plans have been filed as local rules keep some businesses away. Another caller asked about fire trucks used at a church baptism, and interim Fire Marshal Marcus Delaney said firefighters followed policy while union decals are now banned on city property.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Lions edged Joshua 17—16 on Friday at Owl Stadium as a big tackle by Hampton-Ford and a missed extra point by the Owls secured a win that improved their record to 2—4 overall and 1—1 in District 7—5A Division I. The team will return to Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium Friday, Oct.10 to host Cleburne.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Friday, the West Rusk Raiders won 48-0 over the Winona Wildcats as Judson Dotson passed for 166 yards, threw three touchdowns and ran for two scores—his teammates kept the Wildcats scoreless. The Gladewater Bears beat the Sabine Cardinals 47-0 as Achilles Hess added rushing and passing touchdowns while Carsin Cooper scored twice.  Kilgore News Herald
  • The Beckville Bearcats defeated Big Sandy 56-0 on Friday in a District 10 2A Division I football game—senior quarterback Braxton Bullock completed 8-of-8 passes for 164 yards and four touchdowns while Jorden Prince rushed for 140 yards as the defense shut out the opponent with 10 tackles for loss in the first half. Coach Cody Ross praised his team for their strong execution and looks ahead to their next game against Waskom at 7 p.m. next Friday.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Longview Lobos won 35-21 over the Rockwall Yellowjackets on Friday at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium as head coach John King returned from cancer treatment to work from the press box—his 22nd season has seen a strong district record. This win marked his return after a month-long absence and added to the team's district play success.  Longview News-Journal
  • Kilgore (1-3) will host Community Christian at 3 p.m. today at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium. During the game, Kilgore College will honor five inductees and one historic team in a Hall of Fame ceremony while the football team wears special helmet stickers to pay tribute to Hill Country flood victims.  Longview News-Journal
  • October is busy for East Texas outdoor enthusiasts as bow, duck, deer, and squirrel hunting seasons begin while bass anglers enjoy a strong surface bite on decaying lily pads. Anglers try different lures—spinnerbait or punch bait—to catch bass—using exposed insects and bluegill to boost their catch.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Pine Tree Pirates beat the Mabank Panthers 64-8 at Pirate Stadium on Friday while scoring on all seven first-half drives to build a big lead—moving their record to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in district play as the Panthers dropped to 2-2 and 0-1.  Longview News-Journal
  • Today, the Pine Tree Lady Pirates swept Kilgore 25-13, 25-23, 25-14 in District 16-4A play with Bryleigh Mayhan recording eight kills. Yesterday, the Overton Lady Mustangs won 25-15, 25-8, 25-9 over Trinity in non-district action and will resume district play Tuesday at Carlisle — adding momentum to their season.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Today, the Waskom Wildcats defeated the Harleton Wildcats by a score of 28 to 0 in the Battle of the Wildcats as fans cheered a game marked by strong defense. Chris Hernandez rushed for 183 yards and scored two touchdowns — key plays that boost Waskom as they head to Beckville next and Harleton hosts Hawkins next Friday.  Longview News-Journal
