COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chili lovers will compete at the East Texas World Class Chili Cook Off and the East Texas Chili Pod Cook Off on October 4 and 5 at 1112 FM 450 N. in Hallsville—funds raised will support Neal McCoy’s East Texas Angel Network. David Trice, Great Pepper for the East Texas Chili Pod, said participants will sample meat-based recipes and may qualify for an international championship while enjoying raffles.  Longview News-Journal
  • Longview residents donated 6,452 pounds of peanut butter in the Spread the Love Peanut Butter Drive to help the East Texas Food Bank fight hunger—beating Tyler’s 2,259 pounds. Leaders celebrated today at City Hall after both cities collected 8,711 pounds and over $17,000 in donations.  Longview News-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The XV Quinceanera Expo will be held at the Longview Convention Complex (October 12) and will feature vendors from across East Texas who will showcase products and services along with musical performances and raffles.  City of Longview
  • Hallsville native Micah Lyons has written, directed and produced the western film Bad Men Must Bleed, which will debut on streaming platforms on Oct. 7 and stars Chad Michael Murray, Willie Robertson and Bruce Dern. Lyons—owner of Lyons Family Studios—asks East Texans to support his homegrown film by pre-ordering it on Apple TV and iTunes to boost its rankings.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Greg Abbott announced that 28 Texas schools have been named 2025 Lone Star Ribbon Schools for excellent academic performance, including two in East Texas. The program (formerly known as National Blue Ribbon Schools) is now run by the state, marking a shift toward local control in education.  KETK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longview has no current plan to expand its borders as a 2019 law prevents annexation without property owners' permission, according to Development Services Director Michael Shirley. The city is asking residents & business owners to complete surveys that will help shape the Housing Action Plan, a roadmap for tackling housing challenges.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kilgore College Rangers lost 37—20 to Cisco College on Saturday in SWJCFC play, which dropped them to 1—3 overall and 0—3 in conference. Liam Oczkowski passed for 94 yards but threw four interceptions while Cisco improved to 2—1 and Kilgore still leads the all-time series 35—18—1.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Friday, the Overton Lady Mustangs lost a tough 3-2 match to Latexo in District 19-2A play, with Sadie Pahlman recording 46 assists and Mason Fenter scoring 14 kills. The West Rusk Lady Raiders swept Sabine 3-0 in District 16-3A play—where Irelind Hunt made 12 kills and Paisley Smith had 22 digs.  Kilgore News Herald
  • The Longview Lobos lost 13-6 to Pleasant Grove last Friday in non-district action—now holding an 8-11 record—while the team prepares to host Royse City today in their final district match of the season.  Longview News-Journal
  • The West Rusk Raiders beat Elkhart 62–13 on Friday as Judson Dotson threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns while scoring on the ground. Kam Brown caught four passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns — and made two interceptions to help the team gain 419 total yards.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Kilgore's four-time champion Steve Torrence raced Sunday at World Wide Technology Raceway but fell behind Mission Foods' Doug Kalitta due to a poor starting position and ended 206 markers behind the leader — he will start at the 40th Texas Fall Nationals at the Motorplex with little chance to regain his championship run.  Longview News-Journal
  • Owen Holomb led the Christian Heritage Classical School Sentinels to a 32-26 win over Tyler HEAT on Saturday with four touchdown passes—three to Griffin Holt that helped extend their winning streak to three. The team, which began the season with two losses, now prepares to face crosstown rival Trinity School of Texas on Friday.  Longview News-Journal
