- ➤ Longview animal advocates are organizing a bucket raffle drawing and the Nina Effect 5K Nature Trail Run and 1-Mile Dog Walk on Oct.4 at Campbell Woods to support the animal shelter’s microchip and vaccine clinics while honoring former kennel technician Nina Lea Allen, who died in a car wreck in 2022 (raffle tickets cost $5 each and run registrations start at $35 per person). - ➤ Longview Fire Department members received a unit citation on Friday for their 14-day relief work in Kerrville during last July's floods—an effort that involved multiple evacuations. Fire Chief Gregg Grimes said the award honors the team's sacrifice and bravery in protecting residents. KETK

- ➤ Jonathan Diaz opened Gavilan Vintage at 1615 Pine Tree Road in West Longview to offer unique vintage clothing inspired by his childhood trips to second-hand stores, and his shop is open Wednesday-Saturday. Meanwhile, Christus Urgent Care at 2101 W. Loop 281 will get over $3 million in interior renovations and residents Ashly and Keith Lloyd have proposed a self-service dog wash at the Boorman Trail head — the project is expected to launch in a few months pending City Council approval. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Earlier this week, a local scout found a sawtooth oak dropping heavy acorns that attracted deer and other animals; he took samples for research and now plans to plant more trees—boosting food for local wildlife. The tree, imported from East Asia in 1862, is prized for its early mast drop that deer love. Longview News-Journal

- ➤ Whitehouse City Council has scheduled a special election on Nov. 4 to vote on eight charter amendments recommended by a City Charter Review Commission to update candidate qualifications, appointments, and signature requirements. The proposals aim to remove outdated rules and allow changes such as eliminating the 21-year-old mandate for candidates+aligning the charter with state law. KETK
- ➤ The East Texas Council of Governments is accepting applications for the 2025 Veteran-Friendly Community Designation Program that rewards communities in its 14 counties for helping veterans. Cities must apply by December 19th at 5:00 p.m. — ETCOG staff will provide help if needed — to show their strong support. Kilgore News Herald
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ TCU wide receiver Eric McAlister was named the national player of the week on Friday, September 26 after he recorded 254 receiving yards—his second best in program history—and three touchdowns to lift TCU to a 35-24 win over SMU. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ The Gladewater Bears overcame a 21-point deficit to beat the Jefferson Bulldogs 28-27 on Friday when Maddox Vasquez picked off a pass that set up a late score. Jeremiah Flanagan scored on a 1-yard run with 3:44 left and an extra point gave the Bears their win. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ On Friday night, the Brenham Cubs beat the Gilmer Buckeyes 49-7 at Lobo Stadium with key plays from C.J. Glover, Xyran Upshaw and Chris Guidry+ the Cubs racked up 474 total yards while Gilmer managed only 268, dropping the Buckeyes to 1-4 as Brenham improved to 5-0. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Kilgore faces Cisco today at 3 p.m. at Chesley Stadium in a SWJCFC football game—this marks the 54th meeting between the teams, with Kilgore holding a 35–17–1 advantage as both teams look to improve their records. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ The Kilgore Bulldogs defeated the Pine Tree Pirates by a score of 35—7 on Friday at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium. The team rushed for 185 yards, passed for 185 yards, and held strong defense, and Kilgore will visit Henderson on Oct. 3 while Pine Tree is set to host Mabank. Longview News-Journal
