COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Longview Arboretum welcomes fall with a plant sale on Sept. 27 that opens at 9 a.m.—local gardeners can pick up plants and treats while enjoying festive seasonal tips. The Arboretum will also host a fall concert series every Thursday in October featuring bluegrass, local bands, and a special Halloween show.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city said it will install culverts to stop flooding at 1709 Wellington Lane using a $200,000 allocation, but contracts will be finalized after Oct. 1 when the new budget begins.  Longview News-Journal
  • At the Longview Chamber of Commerce’s State of the Workforce event last Wednesday, local schools and businesses showed programs that help students learn job skills, and U.S.Rep. Nathaniel Moran explained his plans in Congress to offer tax credits for apprenticeship programs and use Pell Grants for course funding. Moran also described a bill to use tariff money to cut national debt — steps meant to build a stronger skilled workforce in the area.  Longview News-Journal

  • Today at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium, Pine Tree with a 2-2 record will face Kilgore holding a 3-1 record at 7:30 p.m.—Coach Jason Bachman leads Pine Tree while Clint Fuller coaches Kilgore in a key district play following last week’s games.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Tuesday, Kilgore College beat Nelson University 9-4 in a college softball game where Mary Newville had five hits and drove in three runs while Jasmine Gallegos added three hits and an RBI. The Rangers used six pitchers, with Baylee Smith earning the win, and the team is set to visit Grambling on Thursday.  Kilgore News Herald

  • Mount Enterprise senior Kaegan Ash earned Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Players of the Week honor after scoring 54 of his team’s 62 points in a 62-57 win over Shelbyville on September 25. He made key plays on offense, defense and special teams to help keep his team unbeaten in an East Texas showdown — and he is nearing 1,000 rushing yards for the season.  Longview News-Journal
