COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Greater Longview United Way launched its 'United Is the Way' fundraising campaign on Tuesday at Infinity Event Center to raise $1 million for 17 local nonprofits—campaign chair Erika Rader noted that community needs remain high. About $300,000 has been raised so far and the group will continue its efforts during the 2025–26 campaign.  Longview News-Journal
  • Longview Fire Department and a local State Farm agent teamed last Tuesday to set up a new inflatable home structure on Pine Tree Road that teaches fire safety to children and adults. The display offered a water-based smoke simulation and featured hazards like a stove and fireplace—helping firefighters show safe escape routes during events such as Fire Prevention Week.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Longview ISD held School Safety Night at Foster Middle School Tuesday so parents learned how local first responders and district staff keep students safe in class — officials reminded families to keep fire lanes clear, talk with children about emergencies, and prepare for nearly $3 million in new cameras funded by a $20 million bond.  KETK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Several residents attended a housing needs assessment meeting at the Maud Cobb Convention Center on Tuesday to learn about Longview’s current housing challenges and future action plans—city Housing Manager Shateva Marshall and urban planner Laney Corey stressed the importance of survey feedback and preliminary data in shaping policy adjustments.  KETK
  • Hallsville City Council approved the 2025-26 budget with a new tax rate of 27.52 cents per $100 valuation—lowered minimum auction bids for two former city properties by $50K and appointed Lara Hood to fill the vacant alderman seat after her father’s death.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Troup and Arp are 4-0 and have moved into the top five in the Class 3A/2A/TAPPS poll, with Troup at No.4 and Arp at No.5 plus they will play in the Seven-Mile Rivalry on Friday. In the Class 6A/5A/4A poll, Carthage is still No.1 and Kilgore, Chapel Hill, Lindale, and Lufkin round out the top five.  Kilgore News Herald
  • In Week 4 of high school football, players from many schools posted strong numbers with rushing, passing and defense in several close games. Local Johnny Hamilton—playing for the Lobos—had good passing and running plays while other teams also recorded key touchdowns and tackles.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Mount Enterprise's Kaegan Ash and Beckville's Dillan Koger earned Player of the Week honors for their high school football performances last Friday—Ash scored six touchdowns and accumulated 955 rushing yards in a 62—57 win over Shelbyville while Koger made 17 tackles in a key District win.  Longview News-Journal
  • The West Rusk Lady Raiders defeated the White Oak Ladynecks 3-1 in District 16-3A play Tuesday as they overcame a five-point deficit in the first set and held off a late rally for the win. The victory improved West Rusk’s record to 22-11 while White Oak fell to 14-15.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Junior Carly Chadwick led the Pine Tree Lady Pirates to two District 16-4A wins last week by posting 57 assists, 30 digs, nine kills and six aces—earning her Longview News-Journal Player of the Week honors after a tough five-set loss to Gilmer on Sept. 12. The team hosted Henderson on Tuesday and Chadwick now has 530 assists combined with 103 kills, 207 digs and 60 aces.  Longview News-Journal
  • LETU's women's soccer goalkeeper Kinsey Fulks was awarded the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday—her second honor in three weeks—after making 12 saves in two matches including 11 against Howard Payne. The YellowJackets are 5-1-1 on the season and will play Concordia Texas on Friday at 5 p.m.  Longview News-Journal
  • Rylee Lovette posted a round of 77 to win the individual title at the Mount Pleasant Invitational on Monday while helping the Spring Hill Lady Panthers finish seventh. Ramsey Ragan of Sulphur Springs recorded a 78 and Kynlee Henderson of Texas High recorded a 79 — Hallsville won the team title with a 349 total.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Lady Lobos defeated Tyler Legacy in a volleyball match on Tuesday at Lobo Coliseum by rallying in five sets to win the final set 15 to 10 and improve their record to 21 to 9. Coach Chaka Jackson praised the team's grit — with Jaharia Hunter recording 30 kills in the contest.  Longview News-Journal
