EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jacob Lusk, the Pine Tree ISD CTE Director, was named CTAT Area Administrator of the Year for advancing career and technical education — his award recognizes programs that link students with real-world experience and industry partnerships. KETK
- ➤ Longview high school juniors and seniors will have the chance to attend the College and Career Expo on October 2—where colleges, universities, trade schools and companies will share information about future education and job paths. A flyer and school registration form are available to help interested students join the event. City of Longview
- ➤ A Huntington ISD teacher resigned after students reported she made a hurtful comment following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Superintendent Carolyn Fiaschetti said Brianna Parrish (a U.S. government and world geography teacher) stepped down on Tuesday as the Texas Education Agency reviewed more than 280 complaints against educators. - ➤ Gov. Greg Abbott signed a law—ending the annual STAAR test for grades 3 through 8 and replacing it with three smaller exams given during the school year. The new tests, starting in the 2027-28 school year, will return scores with detailed reports within two days to help teachers and parents track student progress. Longview News-Journal
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday, the Overton Mustangs beat the Maud Cardinals 49-22 as their balanced attack and strong defense forced turnovers early in the game—paving the way for multiple touchdowns. Overton is 3–1 and will host Grapeland next week in the District 11-2A opener. Kilgore News Herald
- ➤ The Longview High tennis team won a 10-8 match against Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday in District 10-6A play and improved to a 7-10 overall record and 2-2 in district matches—players in both singles and doubles experienced strong wins and tough losses. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Local football teams Longview, Pine Tree and Spring Hill are playing away games today. Longview faces Ruston at 7:30 p.m. at Hoss Garrett Stadium — Pine Tree and Spring Hill will compete at Bobcat Stadium and Jack V. Murphy-Bear Stadium respectively. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Kilgore's Steve Torrence, a four-time world champion and head of CAPCO Contractors Toyota, embraced NHRA's four-wide racing after sitting out events left him in (ninth) place when the Countdown began. After a strong performance last week, he will compete in today's qualifying sessions at 3:45 p.m. and 6 p.m. at ZMax Dragway and hopes to gain ground before his team's home race at the Texas Motorplex. - ➤ The Kilgore Rangers will host Navarro at 5 p.m. Saturday at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium in Kilgore—both teams will look to improve their records after a loss by Kilgore against New Mexico Military Institute and a win by Navarro over Northeastern Oklahoma. The teams, led by coaches Willie Gooden and Ryan Taylor, meet for the 94th time in their long-standing series. Longview News-Journal
