COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Longview and East Texas can enjoy a busy weekend with Downtown Live on Sept. 19 at Heritage Plaza featuring Curtis Grimes, a historic home tour on Sept. 20 to raise funds for the Historical Museum, a Superhero 5K run at Triple Creek Shopping Center, a downtown farmers market, a chalk art contest, and additional events in Marshall and Tyler—offering diverse local activities for all ages.  Longview News-Journal
  • East Texas is celebrating the fall season with events from September 18 to November that include festivals, art walks, trunk-or-treats and Oktoberfest celebrations. Longview will host an Autumn Market on Sept. 20 and a Fall Art Walk on Oct. 2—part of a broader list that spans cities from Athens to Tyler and invites local families to join in the festivities.  KETK

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Gregg County Historical Foundation and Museum will host the Landmarks of Longview Architectural Home Tour on Sept. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m., offering five Longview homes for public viewing. The tour features residences in Hollybrook Coves and Forest Hills — including a favorite home at 2904 Celebration Way — that showcase striking designs and artful interiors to highlight community culture.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. James Talarico hosted a campaign rally at the Longview Community Center on Wednesday evening as part of his U.S. Senate run — he aimed to connect with East Texas voters. He vowed to fight big money corruption — and said he would return frequently ahead of the November 3 election.  KETK
  • Longview Fire Department will honor its firefighters who helped during the deadly July floods in Kerrville—attendees are invited to the ceremony scheduled for Friday, September 26 at 4 p.m. at Fire Station 5 located at 102 W. Niblick St.  City of Longview

HEALTH NEWS

  • Epidemiologist Bonny Mayes from the Texas Department of State Health Services said Chagas disease is a low threat to Texans despite 292 reported cases since 2013 — the disease spreads when kissing bugs pass feces on skin openings and most people show no symptoms. Medical providers should stay alert for rare cases that could lead to heart or digestive issues, and residents are urged to seal homes to reduce bug entry.  Longview News-Journal

  • Local teams are set to play football tonight at 7 p.m.—matchups include Henderson vs. Gainesville at Homer Norville Field, Overton vs. Maud at George Frost Field, Beckville vs. Harleton at R.C. Beauchamp Stadium, Grand Saline vs. Joaquin at Skinner Street, Hawkins vs. Elysian Fields at Lowrance Field, and Waskom vs. Union Grove at Jimmy E. Cox Stadium.  Longview News-Journal
  • Grand Saline's Jett Taylor and Paul Pewitt's Boone Hodges were among six winners of the Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Player of the Week awards for Week 3, with Taylor recording 311 yards and four touchdowns and Hodges making 22 tackles in key wins + both players were recognized for their strong performances on and off the field.  Longview News-Journal
  • Overton Lady Mustangs won 25-17, 27-25, 25-20, 25-18 over Waskom on Tuesday with sophomore Sadie Pahlman adding 31 assists and two aces to extend their winning streak to five games—Overton will play Linden-Kildare in a pre-district match on Friday before opening district play against Alto on Tuesday. The Sabine Lady Cardinals swept Arp 25-18, 26-24, 25-15 in District 16-3A play with strong efforts from Keeley McCann and Sarah Roberts.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Overton and Maud will play football today at 7 p.m. at George Frost Field on Hwy 8 in Maud — Overton holds a 2-1 record with two shutout wins while Maud is 0-3 and has struggled on defense.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Former Hallsville standout Kinley Pessel won her second straight tournament on Tuesday by scoring a 2-under (70) at Olivas Links, finishing four strokes ahead of her closest rival. The LeTourneau women's golf team tied for fourth and will next compete at the Jacksonville College Classic on September 29 and 30.  Longview News-Journal
