EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kilgore High School celebrated homecoming with a Friday parade and a football game against Gilmer at R.E. St. John Stadium — students also enjoyed dress up days and a dance throughout the week.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Spring Hill ISD leaders will meet with district residents on September 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Spring Hill Junior High Little Theater to answer questions about the proposed tax rate increase and bond measures — residents will vote on these matters on November 4.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Legislature ended a bill that would have limited property tax income for cities and counties, and local leaders warned that more state measures might soon affect Longview's funding. City Manager Rolin McPhee said the fight over local control is not over — state lawmakers could try new restrictions on tax revenue in the future.  Longview News-Journal
  • Kevin May retired last week after a 36-year career in the fire service, including 25 years with the Longview Fire Department and serving as fire marshal since 2017—he said he loved every day of his work and plans to spend his retirement with his family.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, the Longview Lady Lobos bounced back by beating Royse City 3-2 with Triniti Jackson scoring 23 kills—other district and non-district volleyball matches saw teams like White Oak and Troup post key wins as players delivered strong performances.  Longview News-Journal
  • At Eagle Stadium in Lindale, the Eagles edged out the Vandals 56 to 49 on Friday night in the FM 16 Rivalry when David Lindig scored on a 17 yard run with 31 seconds left and Cam Beason recovered a fumble with less than 15 seconds remaining to secure the win+ Lindale earned its first win over the Vandals since 2022 and will face Gilmer on Sept. 19.  Longview News-Journal
  • Henderson Lions (2–1) beat the Jacksonville Indians (0–3) 50–2 on Friday night; the Lions built a 35–0 lead at halftime with key plays by Vince Howard and Varian Williams who forced turnovers. Henderson will face Gainesville next Thursday at Kaufman High School while Jacksonville will regroup with a game at Athens on Friday.  Longview News-Journal
  • High school football week 3 saw standout performances as Bosston Johnson of Pine Tree posted five catches for 110 yards and four touchdowns—while other players recorded key interceptions, tackles and rushing yards across competitive games. Teams such as Pine Tree, White Oak and Jefferson secured wins amid intense play.  Longview News-Journal
