EDUCATION NEWS

  • Deniel Romaniuk is a third grade student from Hallsville ISD who was chosen yesterday from thousands of nominations for the National Math Stars program. He is one of 57 state-selected students and will receive a support package valued at over 100,000 dollars that includes weekly math mentoring and advanced learning opportunities.  Longview News-Journal
  • Kylie Caraway of White Oak High School was named Miss Gregg County at the Gregg County Fair in Longview on Thursday, competing against five other high school representatives. The event showed strong community support as many cheered on their schools—highlighting local talent and school spirit.  Longview News-Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Early Teal season will run from September 20 to 28 as Blue Wing Teal counts dropped and the season has been cut to nine days. Hunters must hold a Texas hunting license, migratory gamebird endorsement and Federal Duck Stamp—rules set by federal agencies—before they head to the marsh.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas lawmakers closed the second special session last Thursday by passing a new congressional map, flood relief and safety measures while failing to resolve the debate on THC regulation—leaving this issue still unsettled. They also made ivermectin available over the counter, replaced the STARR test, authorized election fraud prosecutions, reversed a voting rule, and let a proposal to limit local property tax increases fall through.  Kilgore News Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mason Tigue scored four rushing touchdowns and Quinlan Ford erased a 20—point halftime deficit to lead the home team to a 49—41 win over the Spring Hill Panthers on Friday at Panther Stadium; Spring Hill will visit Gladewater on Friday to start their next contest.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Kilgore Bulldogs scored on nine of 10 possessions to beat the Buckeyes 66-6 at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium during their homecoming on Friday — Rayshaun Williams led with 209 yards and three touchdowns.  Kilgore News Herald
  • On Thursday, the White Oak Roughnecks beat the Quitman Bulldogs 63—13 as Jaxsen Ludlow passed for 326 yards and five touchdowns — West Rusk edged Gladewater 15—14 when Daylan Williams scored on a run. Pleasant Grove, Overton, and Carlisle also won their games, with Pleasant Grove beating Daingerfield 49—7, Overton Mustangs shutting out Bowie 34—0, and Carlisle Indians winning 27—22 by turning three fumbles in the first half into touchdowns.  Longview News-Journal
  • Dallas South Oak Cliff won 20-17 over the Lobos on Friday at Kincaide Stadium—Jayden Williams connected with Delvin Cook for the game-winning 28-yard touchdown with 7:38 left. The Lobos dropped to 2-1 and will travel to Ruston next Friday while SOC improved to 2-1.  Longview News-Journal
  • Kilgore with a 1-0 record will face NMMI, which is 1-1, today at 3 p.m. at Wool Bowl in Roswell—this matchup marks their 13th meeting with Kilgore holding a 9-3 advantage.  Longview News-Journal
  • Henderson’s Jacie Boothe—a standout hitter with a .350 average and 34 wins in three seasons—signed a national letter-of-intent to play softball at LSU-A in the Red River Athletic Conference.  Longview News-Journal
  • Carthage Bulldogs dominated their homecoming game on Friday as senior KJ Edwards broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run on the second play and the defense forced a safety — the team won 47–0 over L.E. Senior Carson Crawford added scores on both offense and defense while quarterback Jett Surratt threw for 214 yards and three touchdowns.  Longview News-Journal
  • Friday at Pirate Stadium, the Pine Tree Pirates secured their first win of the season with a 46—29 score as Bosston Johnson caught five passes for 119 yards and four touchdowns while Rashaad Wofford made three interceptions including one returned for a touchdown that clinched the game—The Pirates will face Hallsville next week.  Longview News-Journal
