COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local businesses and civic leaders in Longview honored first responders on Sept. 11 during Patriot Day ceremonies + Treviso Transitional Care served firefighters breakfast while nursing home staff and other groups presented crosses and held a crane ceremony with an American flag.  Longview News-Journal
  • East Texas police and fire departments posted tributes on social media yesterday to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the 9/11 attacks—remembering the courage of first responders. Departments from Longview, Tyler, Kilgore, Texarkana, and Payne Springs reflected on the loss and unity of the community.  KETK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kilgore Fire Department said it is hiring a Fire Marshal who will manage fire prevention, code enforcement, safety checks, and investigations— the job comes with a flexible schedule, cost-of-living raises, and paid training.  Kilgore News Herald
  • On Thursday, September 11, Public Works Director Dwayne Archer said the City Council looked at moving funds from Longview’s reserves to double the street overlay budget from $2 million to $4 million for fixing six busy collector streets. The extra funds will extend pavement life and lower long-term costs—no final decision was made.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • LeTourneau’s women’s golfer Kinley Pessel became SCAC Golfer of the Week after scoring a program record 3-under, 69 at the Energy Weldfab Tempest Intercollegiate — her record performance helped the team win the tournament. Freshman men's golfer Rafa Torres also earned his first SCAC honor by finishing 4-under, 68 with a playoff win — LeTourneau will compete in further tournaments on Sept. 15 and Sept. 21.  Longview News-Journal
  • Today at 7:30 p.m. three high school football games kick off in Longview—Longview will take on South Oak Cliff at John Kincaide Stadium, Pine Tree will meet Dallas Carter at Pirate Stadium, and Spring Hill will face Quinlan Ford at Panther Stadium. Key players and coaches, including interim coach Oscar Wilson and quarterback Johnny Hamilton, are set to deliver competitive play as fans watch closely.  Longview News-Journal
  • Today, high school football teams from East Texas will face off in several games at venues such as Bobcat Stadium in Hallsville, R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium in Kilgore, and Bud Moody Stadium in Quitman with kickoffs at 7:00 or 7:30 p.m. Standout players like Remington Franklin and Kayson Brooks are expected to impact contests as teams aim to improve their records this season.  Longview News-Journal
  • Kilgore and Gilmer, both 1-1, will face off today at 7:30 p.m. at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium. Gilmer edged Kilgore 24-22 last year—Kilgore aims to build on key plays by Kayson Brooks and his teammates for a win.  Kilgore News Herald
  • The Kilgore College softball team closed a busy weekend with wins over Next Gen and Nitro 18U after opening its fall season in Tatum with a 5-4 loss to 643 Fastpitch—they will host TSF-Martin on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at The Ballpark at KC Commons.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Hughes Springs’ A.J. Morton and Harleton’s Drake Phillips were named Built Ford Tough Player of the Week winners for Week 2—Morton recorded five receptions for 130 yards and three interceptions in a win over Ore City while Phillips rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns in a victory over Queen City.  Longview News-Journal
