COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Gregg County Fair returns to Longview with a long tradition of family fun and fried food as it runs until Saturday. The fair offers booth games, a petting zoo, live music and free gate admission for veterans, current military, first responders and health professionals—ensuring a festive experience for local families.  KETK
  • Former Dallas Cowboy Kelvin Edwards visited Arabella of Longview Independent Living on Wednesday to support local seniors and share his work through his charity Kelvin’s Kindness — which aids vulnerable children and families.  KETK
  • The Julianna Trail pedestrian bridge reopened on September 10 after repairs for erosion and wear—City Council awarded a $187,888 contract to C.E. Marler & Associates to complete the work. The .75-mile trail now connects Reel Road to McWhorter Park.  City of Longview

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longview Fire Marshal Kevin May retired on Wednesday after 25 years of service when a ceremony was held at the fire training center plus a flag ceremony honored his contributions at the Central Fire Station. He said he hoped to have made a difference in the community and advised new firefighters to come in with an open mind.  KETK
  • Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and the Texas Department of Agriculture ordered the destruction of infested hibiscus shipped from Costa Farms to stop the invasive cotton jassid—state inspectors are reviewing retail locations and educating growers to prevent its spread.  Kilgore News Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kilgore High School Health Science SkillsUSA students will host their first blood drive of the school year today from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Health Science classrooms—an event that honors the 24-year anniversary of 9/11.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Special Health Resources—BHIP will host a Community Health & Resource Expo at Maude Cobb Convention Center on September 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and it will provide community health information and services for local residents.  City of Longview

SPORTS NEWS

  • The West Rusk Lady Raiders won their district game over Arp by three straight sets Tuesday. Pine Tree, Troup and Elysian Fields also won their district matches — Pine Tree beat Kilgore, Troup swept Sabine and Elysian Fields defeated Leverett's Chapel.  Kilgore News Herald
  • LeTourneau's soccer team earned its fourth straight shutout after defeating Wiley 3—0 on Tuesday evening at the LETU Soccer Field—Camila Andrade scored her first goal while Chanel Kemball—Cook added two second—half goals to give the Wildcats their first loss this season. The win improved the YellowJackets record to 3—0—1 and sets up a home game against LaGrange on Saturday at 11 a.m.  Longview News-Journal
  • Today at 7 p.m., two high school football games will occur at Coach Chester Roy Stadium in Overton and at Jack V. Murphy—Bear Stadium in Gladewater. Overton with a 1 win and 1 loss record will meet James Bowie with no wins and 2 losses while West Rusk with a 1 win and 1 loss record faces Gladewater with 2 wins as teams look to improve their standings.  Kilgore News Herald
  • The Longview Lobo tennis team lost to Tyler Legacy on Tuesday in District 10-6A play with a 10-2 score, dropping their record to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in the district. The team will face Prosper this Friday in Rockwall.  Longview News-Journal
  • The week 3 football schedule has Eastern Texas teams playing today with games like West Rusk at Gladewater at 7 p.m. and others starting at 6:30 p.m., while more matchups—such as Longview at Dallas SOC at 7:30 p.m.—are set for Friday, Sept. 12.  Longview News-Journal
  • Lear Park in Longview will host the Pine Tree Mike Darby Cross Country Invitational on Friday with races beginning at 8 a.m.—the meet was renamed to honor coach Mike Darby's 38 years of service. Teams from regional schools will compete in events ranging from 2 miles to 5K.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Today several high school football games kick off—West Rusk faces Gladewater at 7 p.m. at Jack V. Murphy-Bear Stadium in Gladewater while James Bowie, Union Hill, Frankston, Shelbyville and Carlisle take the field at various local stadiums with contests starting between 6:30 and 7 p.m. These matchups offer a full slate of high school contests for teams across the region.  Longview News-Journal
