COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thousands of East Texans attended Bear Creek Smokehouse’s third annual BBQ and Balloon Festival Saturday, September 6—held near Marshall—featuring free barbecue, live music, and hot air balloon displays. Owner Robbie Shoults—who said families enjoyed the event—said a fourth festival is planned for the future.  Longview News-Journal
  • Saturday's Great Cardboard Boat Race at Teague Park brought 21 teams together to build superhero-themed boats that raised funds for the Greater Longview United Way. Contestants improved their boat designs over the years and experienced mixed results — one local attorney even lost a shoe while paddling to shore.  Longview News-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The B. Franklin Martin House at 800 N. Sixth St.—a 1930s Tudor-style home in Nugget Hill—received Historic Preservation Commission approval and could become Longview’s 12th Local Historic Landmark when the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council approve the designation. Cody and Wendy Arnold, who bought the home in June, have started turning a detached guest house and garage into an apartment where they will live while restoring the main house.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LeTourneau University began inflating a new 120,000-square-foot air dome on Friday as leaders, students, and builders celebrated the start of a nearly $30 million project that will be one of the first air-supported athletic facilities in the Lone Star State. The dome—set to host indoor track meets and serve local high schools—will finish inflating Monday as construction continues for the next year.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Smith County ESD2 broke ground on its twelfth fire station near Jamestown today—located at 24971 County Road 453—and the facility will house career firefighters to deliver 24/7 coverage when construction finishes in 2026.  KETK

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, the Henderson Lions beat the Liberty-Eylau Leopards 51—13 with RB Jesstin Starling scoring three rushing touchdowns and Ivan Navarro’s 30—yard field goal giving them a 24—0 lead at halftime. The win helped the team rebound from a tough loss, and they will play their first home game next Friday while the Leopards head to Carthage.  Longview News-Journal
  • Jaxsen Ludlow passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more as the White Oak Roughnecks held off the Paul Pewitt Brahmas 30-26 on Friday at Roughneck Stadium—White Oak gained 486 total yards and improved their record to 2-0.  Longview News-Journal
  • West Rusk won 22-12 against Diboll on Saturday with Judson Dotson throwing for 110 yards and three touchdowns while Gunner Harp made key plays. On Friday, Carlisle beat Overton 17-7 under Tony Ibarra’s leadership and Harmony won 17-7 over Sabine with strong effort from Griffin Dehoyos.  Kilgore News Herald
