CRIME NEWS

  • Gregg County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an active crime scene at Hugh Camp Memorial Park in Liberty City as Sabine Emergency Services District and Texas Department of Public Safety respond; officials say there is no threat to the public.  KETK

CULTURE NEWS

  • Gladewater veteran Alfred Lacy, who turned 99 in June, shares his yellowing scrapbook filled with crisp black-and-white photos taken in Okinawa while serving in the Navy—showing his light-hearted moments with pals and the somber side of wartime life.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • A Q&A article details Longview's golf past by discussing Pinecrest Country Club, founded in 1921 and later expanded to an 18 hole course, and Floyd Boone Public Golf Course, the area's first 18 hole course that opened on June 30th, 1938—local businessmen bought it in 1940.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Spring Hill Lady Panthers won the championship at White Oak’s Shirley Atkins Tournament on Saturday by beating Madisonville, Pleasant Grove, and Lufkin. Elizabeth Corbitt was named MVP and the team improved its record to 15 to 4—Savannah Irwin and Kaylee Londeau also earned all-tournament honors.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Saturday, LeTourneau rebounded in volleyball with a 3—2 win over LaGrange and a 3—1 win over St. Catherine as five players logged 15 or more kills, including Emma Smith who had 23; the team now heads to the Coca-Cola Invitational on Sept. 5—6 in Lookout Mountain while other squads prepare for upcoming cross country and soccer meets—women’s soccer meets Belhaven on Wednesday at 5 p.m.  Longview News-Journal
  • The West Rusk Lady Raiders finished second at the inaugural Beckville Volleyball Classic held from Thursday to Saturday—recording a 17-9 season and losing a close three-set championship match to Beckville with scores of 22-25, 26-24, 21-25.  Kilgore News Herald
  • The Longview Lobos rose from No. 17 to No. 10 in the Class 6A football rankings after a 1-0 win at Lobo Stadium on Friday, August 29—boosting the team's season record. The ranking shows the team is performing well as they prepare for upcoming games.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Friday, Faustina Academy opened its season with a 56—30 win over the Christian Heritage Sentinels. The Sentinels struggled as they used two quarterbacks who combined for 216 yards passing and two touchdowns, while Owen Holcomb completed six of 15 passes for 140 yards with one touchdown and one interception.  Longview News-Journal
  • ET Week 2 Football Schedule names many games on Thursday, Sept. 4 and Friday, Sept. 5 — including Marshall at Longview on Friday at 7:30 p.m. — with matchups set at 7 p.m. on Thursday in various towns across the region.  Longview News-Journal
