GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hallsville ISD trustees approved the 2025-26 budget and cut the tax rate to 77.72 cents per $100 valuation — a change made possible by Senate Bill 4 which raised the homestead exemption to $140,000. The district set aside $16.5 million to expand parking at Bobcat Stadium and build a junior high athletic complex — and it used $5.2 million for an extra 3% raise for non-teachers.  Longview News-Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Neil Sperry offers Texas gardeners practical tips for making pot mums thrive by pinching them in late spring and mid-summer to encourage bushy growth and staking the plants before they become top-heavy. He also provides advice on caring for yaupon hollies, live oaks, and controlling lawn weeds to maintain healthy yards.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 10 Kilgore College Rangers hammered the Raiders 80-0 on Saturday at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium—scoring with rushing touchdowns, a kickoff return and other plays in their season debut. They showed a strong defense that held the Raiders to negative yardage and will face New Mexico Military Institute on Sept. 13.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Kilgore Lady Bulldogs finished fourth in the gold bracket of the Lady Hawk Volleyball Tournament after posting a 6-3 record from Thursday to Saturday — a record that marked key wins and losses. They opened with a win over Greenville Homeschool — but lost in the semi-final and third-place games.  Kilgore News Herald
  • During week 1 primetime football, Longview players Johnny Hamilton, Lawson Tubb and Jessier Hampton-Williams delivered standout performances with Hamilton completing 11 of 18 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 93 yards, and Tubb and Hampton-Williams making key defensive plays.
