COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City crews have renovated the Harvey Johnson Community Center at 1406 E. Birdsong St after Brenda Wooldridge raised concerns over needed repairs, and it will reopen at noon tomorrow for community events. Wooldridge will thank the workers with a special lunch featuring green beans, corn, and barbecue ribs — a gesture that honors the often overlooked foot soldiers.  Longview News-Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Saturday, the third annual Kidz Bizniz Expo was held at the Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview. The free event gave young entrepreneurs (aged 5 to 17) a chance to present their crafts, baking, and martial arts skills.  KETK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Pine Tree ISD students — Theone Frederick, Eva Vizueth, and Jezibella Martindale — won the 2025 Texas School Safety Center Art Contest, earning statewide recognition for their creative portrayals of school safety. They were honored last week for their artwork that highlights safe school environments.  KETK

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Longview High School standout Willie Nelson scored on an interception return—helping No. 9 Tyler Junior College beat Dodge City College 27-7 at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium on August 24th. Tyler quarterback Tre Guerra threw two touchdown passes while the Apaches held Dodge City to 179 total yards as they prepare for upcoming games in Utah and Athens.  Longview News-Journal
  • After finishing a 5-5 season in 2024 where the team scored a record 468 points, the Hawkins football team begins its second year under head coach Bill Cowley with plans to improve its defense. The team will travel to Maud on Aug. 29—players stressed that working harder on defense is key to a deep playoff run.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Week 1 high school football schedule includes games starting Thursday, August 28 with matchups like Texas High at Tyler Legacy and Lindale at Hallsville scheduled at 7 p.m. Games continue on Friday and Saturday with contests such as Lufkin at Longview at 7:30 p.m. and Winona versus Big Sandy at 6 p.m.—all times are confirmed.  Longview News-Journal
  • Runners from Grace Community, Winona, Lindale and Tenaha won individual titles at the Tyler Legacy Invitational at Lindsey Park on Saturday morning—while Tyler Legacy, Tyler HEAT, Grace Community and Garland Sachse claimed team titles. Legacy led the girls open 5K with 42 points and the event set a promising tone for the cross country season.  Longview News-Journal
