COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Longview and surrounding areas have many community events planned this weekend. The Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center will host a pet adoption event on Aug 23 from noon to 5 p.m. with waived fees when donating a *50-ounce* bag of Pup-Peroni, and the *Historic* Farmers Market will run from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Aug 23.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LeTourneau University and Longview community leaders broke ground on a $15 million aviation facility at the Paul and Betty Abbott Aviation Center—located adjacent to East Texas Regional Airport—that will include a 16,000-square-foot hangar and extra classrooms. Construction by Longview-based Transet Co. is expected to last 16 to 18 months and will allow the school to enroll 200 more aviation students.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Spring Hill ISD Board of Trustees is asking voters to approve a tax rate increase and a $20 million bond proposal that will fund renovations at the junior high, updates to the football stadium, and improvements to the tennis complex—voters may begin casting ballots on Oct. 20 with Election Day on Nov. 4 as an average homeowner’s taxes rise by about $60 a year.  KETK
  • East Texas Counsel of Government is accepting applications for its annual municipal solid waste grant funds — about $161,705 available from TCEQ — for local governments and special districts in 14 counties, with a required grant workshop on September 3 in Kilgore. Agencies must apply by September 29 at 4 p.m. and may request funding for projects in FY2026 and FY2027, with priority for tire and educational projects.  Kilgore News Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alzheimer’s Association will host a free presentation at the library on August 29 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM—explaining the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s, types of dementia, ways to support brain health and current research on the disease.  City of Longview

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Longview Lobo and current Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King was named one of 58 candidates for the 2025 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award on Tuesday—his nomination adds to his strong national ranking as his team prepares to open the season on Aug. 29.  Longview News-Journal
  • In volleyball action, Kilgore’s Lady Bulldogs swept Harmony 3–0 with scores of 25–22, 25–17, 25–18 as Elle Litchenburg recorded 27 assists and Giselle Webster tallied 12 kills—Queen City also swept Sabine 3–0 with Sarah Roberts and Keeley McCann leading the scoring. West Rusk defeated Rusk 3–1 and Overton, after dropping the first set 21–25, won the next three sets to best Longview Christian 3–1—delivering a busy day of competitive games.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Today, Longview, Pine Tree and Spring Hill hold scrimmages to practice before the season; Longview visits Texas High, Pine Tree hosts Marshall at Pirate Stadium, and Spring Hill travels to New Diana. Coaches say the games help players test their skills and adjust tactics before the season opener on Aug. 29—giving them one last chance to improve.  Longview News-Journal
