COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Longview will host a grand reopening event at the Harvey Johnson Community Center on Tuesday, Aug. 26 at noon at 1406 E. Birdsong St. The center was renovated with new appliances, painting, and landscaping after community requests, and city officials will be present to explain its rental options and community benefits — a project driven by local input.  City of Longview

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Longview ISD finished its plans for a new indoor facility and CTE upgrades and sent them to the city for review—SCI Construction is bidding for work while the review takes about 45 to 60 days. Construction will start in October with groundbreaking planned in early November as part of the $456.2 million bond approved in 2024.  Longview News-Journal
  • UT Tyler School of Nursing received approval for its Doctor of Nursing Practice nurse anesthesia program from the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, offering current critical care nurses a three-year pathway to earn dual certifications. The program is built to meet East Texas needs—its first cohort will begin this fall.  Kilgore News Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Longview Regional Medical Center announced on Monday that it will name new CEO—Patrick Swindle, an East Texas native with leadership experience from Seton Medical Center Harker Heights; he will begin his role on Sept. 30 to enhance patient care in Longview.  KETK

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University announced that three individuals—Portia Phillips, Nate West, and Dan Miller—will join the LeTourneau Athletics Hall of Fame in October during a ceremony at Solheim Arena as part of Homecoming Weekend. The public is invited to attend the event set for Oct. 4 at 10 a.m.  Longview News-Journal
  • Kilgore's Lady Bulldogs advanced to the silver bracket final in the Tyler Invitational by beating Bryan Rudder and Troup on Saturday, but they lost to Pleasant Grove in the championship match; they also won on Friday (over CDA Christian, Waskom and Kaufman).  Kilgore News Herald
