  • East Texas natives Bre’Ana and Deejay Whiting will move to Zambia in early 2026 to work full time with Godlink — a nonprofit that feeds and educates local children after nearly a decade of mission trips deepening their commitment to serve the community.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller announced Saturday, August 16 that students eligible for reduced-price meals now receive free school meals—funding is extended through the 2026-2027 school year with extra funds for lunches starting after September 1. Schools are accepting household applications, and families should contact their child's school for details.  Kilgore News Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gregg County civil court filings from August 3 to 9 included several lawsuits for personal injury, breach of contract, expunction, and deceptive trade practices. The cases were filed in different courts—the 188th District Court, the 124th District Court, and the County Court at Law 2.  Longview News-Journal

  • Billy Torrence, founder of CAPCO Contractors from Kilgore, Texas, is returning to the track after a 9-month break to race for both a Top Fuel title and a Super Comp title at Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway—he will drive the Top Fuel car once raced by his son. Qualifying occurred Friday and Saturday and final eliminations begin today at 10:30 a.m.—this schedule sets his double duty in motion.  Kilgore News Herald
