EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Longview ISD received a 'B' rating from the Texas Education Agency—based on reading and math scores—and earned 52 campus distinctions this year compared to 40 last year; Superintendent Dr. Marla Sheppard said the district is focused on raising the bar and improving where needed. KETK
- ➤ Sabine ISD in Gladewater has entered the T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights competition and is asking the community to post on social media with the hashtags FNF5GNL — SABINECARDINALS to boost their entry for a chance to win funds to renovate their football stadium. T-Mobile will award $5,000 to each of 450 schools until Sept. 12 and the grand prize will make the district eligible for $1 million in upgrades. KETK

- ➤ The Longview City Council is set to vote on a 2025-26 budget that will grant over a 5% raise to all city employees without a tax rate increase because higher property values have generated extra revenue. City Manager Rolin McPhee presented four raise options with varying percentages and flat increases—discussions focused on supporting low-wage workers, with a vote scheduled for Aug. 22 at 5:30 p.m. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ On August 14, the Region D Water Planning Group voted to remove Canton’s proposal for the Grand Saline Creek Reservoir from the 2026 regional water plan—residents and local officials criticized the project for its use of eminent domain and questionable need amid declining water use. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Today Spring Hill will hold two scrimmage games—one against Jefferson at Panther Stadium starting at 6:30 p.m. and one at Roughrider Stadium for Pine Tree's practice, as coaches check team progress after fall drills. Additional scrimmages are planned later as teams prepare for season openers. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater will host the historic 50th Annual Texas Four-Ball Championship on August 22-24 as 80 two-man teams of top amateur golfers aged 25 and older compete in both championship and senior divisions—public access opens after a Thursday practice round. Head professional Randy Wade and course superintendent Ken Bowman said the course will be kept in top shape for the event. Longview News-Journal
