GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Jay Dean introduced House Bill 116 to replace school maintenance and operations taxes with a 6.72% value-added tax that would take effect in 2030 if approved by voters—potentially paving the way to eliminate property taxes. He also filed bills to study state taxation of goods and services and to offer up to $2,000 in homestead rebates—measures aimed at relieving Texas property owners.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The West Rusk Lady Raiders finished 29-12 last year and advanced to the third round of the volleyball playoffs before falling in a close five-set match against state finalist Boyd — the team now seeks redemption with an alumni game today and plans to host Henderson on Tuesday.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Hawkins Lady Hawks are set to open their season on Tuesday when they will host Harmony, following a winning record in 2024 after a challenging 2023. Senior players Addyson Turrentine + Jentri Evans stressed that strong teamwork and clear communication are key to advancing to the playoffs.  Longview News-Journal
  • Baylor running back Dawson Pendergrass will miss the season after injuring his foot during camp on Saturday, and coach Dave Aranda said he will have surgery that will keep him sidelined for most of the season. His absence will require redshirt sophomore Bryson Washington and younger players to step up—adding pressure to the offense.  Longview News-Journal
