EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers attended the Junior League of Longview’s Poverty Conference on Wednesday at the Belcher Center at LeTourneau University to learn how poverty affects student success. Presenters shared data showing that 44% of households in Gregg County struggle to pay for basic needs and discussed ways to help students overcome these hardships.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longview Mayor Kristen Ishihara asked City Manager Rolin McPhee to propose a new plan that gives employees a 6% plus $1,000 raise without raising property taxes after residents opposed the 1 cent tax hike during a recent meeting — the council approved a tax rate cap and set a public hearing on Aug. 21 with a vote on Aug. 22, and McPhee will return on Aug. 14 with options.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Texas Department of Public Safety announced on Wednesday that Duke, a six-year narcotics detection K-9 in Longview, passed away from rapid liver and kidney issues with his handler by his side. DPS described Duke as a loyal partner whose work was greatly valued.  KETK
  • Members of Longview’s Historic Preservation Commission toured Alton Plaza—a five-story building built in 1953 that began as a parking garage and was later converted to offices before being renovated into apartments—and learned it was designated as a historic landmark in 2018. The designation means the owner must get commission permission to demolish or change the exterior—while also qualifying for waived fees on construction and rehabilitation work.  Longview News-Journal

  • Longtime football official Gene Roberson will be honored on Saturday at Lanes Chapel Methodist Church in Tyler as over 350 fans and officials gather to get ready for the upcoming high school and college football season. He will receive a plaque recognizing his 45 years of service—highlighting his call for new officials to join the sport.  Longview News-Journal
