BUSINESS NEWS

  • Eastman Chemical Co. is delaying the start of its $1.2B molecular recycling facility outside Longview for two years—federal funding of $375M was cancelled in May. The company will appeal the funding loss and reassess the project scope while local officials and economic development leaders hope the project will eventually create many jobs and boost environmental efforts.  Longview News-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist Laren Slaton began work on what may be East Texas' largest mural at Longview Mall after a 45-foot test section won support from mall management. Local businesses can sponsor $20 per square foot of the expanding mural as the project moves forward.  Longview News-Journal
  • Four East Texas Halloween attractions have teamed up as the Frightful Four of East Texas to promote their haunted houses regionally this fall. The group includes Doc Wilkes’ House of Horrors and Graystone Scream Park in Longview, Imminent Doom in Kilgore opening Sept. 27, and World of Kaos in Tyler—designed to offer a new local Halloween destination.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Piney Woods TimberHogs ended their season by splitting two games on Sunday at City Park against the Texarkana Rhinos — they won 11-10 in a late comeback and then lost 16-9 in the nightcap. The TimberHogs finished 20-40 while the Rhinos ended 25-36 and will begin their playoff run with a game in Joplin on Tuesday.  Kilgore News Herald
  • The 18th annual East Texas High School Football Preseason Dream Team has been named by a panel of regional reporters. The roster features Carthage’s Jett Surratt as offensive MVP and DaQuives Beck as defensive MVP—plus players from Kilgore and across the area recognized for their strong play.  Kilgore News Herald
