ECONOMY NEWS

  • Trinity Tank Car will lay off 170 employees in Longview and permanently close its Jordan Valley Rd site effective Sept. 30—company officials said the move is part of a restructuring that affects its operations at both existing locations. The company sent required notifications under the WARN Act.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spring Hill ISD approved a new compensation plan on Thursday that gives teachers different pay raises and benefits for the upcoming school year beginning Aug. 13. Teachers with two or fewer years receive a $2,000 raise, three to four years get $4,000, and five or more years earn $8,000 while non-teaching staff will get a 3% raise and added benefits—Teacher Retirement healthcare, retention and attendance stipends, and a cafeteria allowance.  Longview News-Journal
  • Community groups across East Texas are hosting free back-to-school events that provide school supplies, food, and activities for students and families. In Longview, ROC at First Baptist Church is running a School Supply Train on August 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.—and LifeBridge Christian Center is hosting a Back to School Bash with haircuts, backpacks, and snow cones on the same day.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longview City is proposing fee changes—such as passing credit card processing fees, revising permit and facility rental rates, and adjusting water and trash costs—to better cover rising service expenses. City Council will review these proposals Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., with public hearings on August 21 and budget and tax rate votes scheduled for later dates.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Hallsville teammates Dunn Smith and Ethan Miller earned honorable mention honors on Friday when the Blue Bell/Texas Sportswriters Association released its Class 5A All-State Baseball Team - Smith hit .423 and Miller posted a .390 average without errors. Whitehouse also had three players named on the elite team based on nominations from coaches and media.  Longview News-Journal
  • Former Longview Lobo and current Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List on Thursday (this award honors FBS players for community service and leadership). Earlier this week, he was added to the Maxwell Award Watch List as he enters his final season with strong performance numbers.  Longview News-Journal
