ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A motorcyclist died in a three-vehicle crash near New Chapel Hill on Tuesday at 10:52 a.m. on Highway 64 East and County Road 289—authorities pronounced the rider dead.  KETK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Longview ISD is updating its cell phone rules ahead of the new school year—Texas law HB 1481 bans phones during class hours but allows exceptions for students with special needs and for teachers when needed to support lessons. The district will post signs and give direct instruction while assuring parents that emergency communication plans remain unchanged.  KETK
  • Union Grove ISD trustees accepted Superintendent Kelly Moore’s resignation on Tuesday night after she delayed reporting a spring incident where one student recorded another and the affected student later threatened self-harm. Former superintendent Brian Gray was named interim—efforts now focus on supporting students and staff.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT is reminding Longview drivers to slow down after nearly 160,000 crashes in Texas in 2024 led to 1,467 deaths — speeding was the top factor. The agency has launched its Be Safe. Drive Smart campaign featuring Parker McCollum and extra law enforcement from July 18 until Aug. 3 to help keep roads safe.  Kilgore News Herald
  • The City of Longview began chip seal operations on roads Tuesday to protect surfaces with an asphalt binder—drivers faced brief five-minute lane closures and residents directly affected received flyers with the schedule details. The work is expected to continue for four to five days.  KETK

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents and workers near the Longview plant filed a lawsuit in Marshall’s federal court on July 22, alleging Eastman Chemical released cancer-causing ethylene oxide that exposed people to high risks—especially breast cancer. Plaintiffs, including several survivors, are seeking damages while Eastman must file a response by Sept. 4.  Longview News-Journal

  • On Monday, July 21, the Ark-La-Tex Junior Golf Tour stopped at Wood Hollow Golf Course for an adult and youth event that featured winners from several age divisions including local competitors. The tour will continue on July 28 at Alpine Target Golf Center and on Aug. 4 at Pinecrest Country Club—each event starting at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.  Longview News-Journal
