BUSINESS NEWS

  • George Freeney Jr.'s photo 'Ole Town Road' won the People’s Choice Award in Texas Bank and Trust’s 43rd annual Photography Contest from 620 entries and is on display in the bank’s main lobby at 300 E. Whaley St. until Aug. 1 — Virgel Conner from the UT Tyler Longview Small Business Development Center earned the North Texas SBDC Network's State Star Award and will be honored in September at America's SBDC conference.  Longview News-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Longview native May Cobb's crime novel The Hunting Wives has been adapted into an eight-episode Netflix series that premieres today. The series—set in a town inspired by local East Texas—shows a mix of suspense and rowdy characters that bring the book's spirit to screen.  Longview News-Journal
  • Filming for the faith-based movie ‘Preacher Man’ began on July 20 in Marshall as filmmaker David Ford stars as an escaped convict who finds a chance for redemption by posing as a preacher; extras will be needed next week in Hallsville with 100 people for a church scene on July 26 at 9 a.m. and about 30 for a church picnic on July 23—reporting busy days ahead for the production.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawsuits were filed in Gregg County court from June 29 to July 5, with cases ending in A in the 188th District Court, cases ending in B in the 124th District Court, and cases ending in CCL2 in County Court at Law 2 — covering disputes from breach of contract to auto injury claims.  Longview News-Journal
  • City officials proposed raising the property tax rate by 2.3 cents to 58.49 cents per $100 valuation to fund a 6% salary increase plus a $1,000 bonus for city employees. Budget discussions will continue on July 24, Aug. 5, and Aug. 14 with public hearings on Aug. 21 and a tax vote on Aug. 22 — the plan would mean an extra cost of about $51.36 per year for the average home —.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UIL got mainly positive reviews for its split playoff format that divided teams by enrollment — a change that helped 38 schools win a state championship for the first time. Officials said they will tweak the system in sports like volleyball and baseball to improve fairness.  Longview News-Journal
  • Drake Lee had three hits and three RBI as the TimberHogs scored eight runs in the second inning to beat the Texarkana Rhinos 14-2 on Saturday + the win brought their record to 13-32 while the Rhinos dropped to 15-30.  Longview News-Journal
