- ➤ Martin House Children’s Advocacy Center in Longview has raised $5,267,361 toward its $6,250,000 goal to fund a new 10,000-square-foot center that will expand trauma services for abuse victims. Board member Michael Clements Jr. announced the progress at a celebration at Pinecrest Country Club on Wednesday—an event that showcased plans to nearly triple the size of the current facility serving over 800 children and teens each year. - ➤ A train derailment in downtown blocked Fredonia Street, Center Street, Horaney Street — and the 500 block of E. Cotton Street as crews work to clear the area with no injuries or hazardous materials reported. City of Longview
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 27-year-old Longview man was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison on July 17th for killing two brothers outside a home on June 10th, 2023—surveillance video showed him shooting one victim seven times and his brother in the head. Longview News-Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jackie Terry from Gilmer ISD was named Region 7 Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Region 7 Education Service Center on July 17 and is a semifinalist for the state competition. Shyrah Jones from Troup ISD was named Region 7 Secondary Teacher of the Year and is a semifinalist for the 2026 Texas Teacher of the Year contest, with both teachers receiving a $2,500 prize split by their districts + they will compete against 38 regional teachers in October at TASA Headquarters in Austin.
