- ➤ A home surveillance video captured the June 10, 2023 shooting of two brothers in Longview and is key to the capital murder trial of Jose Daniel Rodriguez, who will turn 28 in August—his lawyer says the killings were self-defense while the prosecutor argues the video shows otherwise. - ➤ Linden-Kildare CISD will not run its after-school program for the 2025-2026 school year after an unexpected loss of federal funding, and the district said it will seek new funding and partnerships to bring the program back in the future. KETK

- ➤ Today the Longview News-Journal reported that three District 8-3A Division I teams, including Jefferson, Liberty-Eylau & Atlanta, will begin the 2025 high school football season ranked in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine’s preseason polls, while districts 7-3A Division I, 10-3A Division II and 11-3A Division II each have two ranked teams. - ➤ Casey Falgout was rehired last week as the head coach of the Beckville Ladycats volleyball team (she coached from 2003-12) to bring modern training to a program with 12 undefeated district titles. She takes over for Andee Poteet (who resigned in late June) and the team is set to improve this season. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Junior Henderson, a 6-foot-4 wide receiver from Carthage High, gave a verbal commitment to the University of Arkansas last week to pursue his academic and athletic career, narrowing his decision between Arkansas and TCU. He said he is excited to focus on his senior season and help his team repeat as state champions. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Longtime New Diana coach Bernie Martinez joins Texas’ Red team at the High Plains Shootout held Monday through Wednesday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark—Hallsville’s Dunn Smith plays for the Red team while New Diana’s Levi Green will play for Texas’ Navy team. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ The Dream Team 2K12 12U softball team from Hallsville won the Road to the Beach National Tournament in Destin, Florida on July 15 by finishing bracket play with a 5—0 record over teams from Tennessee, Texas, Ohio, Georgia and Oklahoma, with coaches Blake Holbert, Chris Hughes and Curtis Gordon leading the team. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Margaret Wright, who helped build the boys soccer program at Longview High for over 20 years and served as an assistant to coach James Wright (her husband), took over as the girls soccer coach after Ron Bellamy retired at the end of last school year. Wright brings decades of coaching and playing experience to lead the Lady Lobos in District 10-6A competitions this season. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ The 14th season of the KYKX Game of the Week will open on Thursday, Aug. 28 with a contest between Lindale from Class 5A and Hallsville from Class 4A and will end with two District 10 Division I games on Oct. 9 and Oct. 23—another game is set for Saturday, Oct. 4. The series, broadcast on KYKX 105.7, gives each school a home game and a chance to award a $1,005 college scholarship to one player at each contest. Longview News-Journal
