COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Camp Tyler director Kathy Lagesse said the camp has reviewed its emergency procedures in response to a tragedy at Camp Mystic to ease parents’ concerns. She added that board members and counselors as young as 17 receive training & follow strict protocols aligned with Texas Safety Youth Act standards.  KETK
  • Longview nonprofit Rehoboth Acres has opened a day center for adults with special needs inside a building on Mobberly Baptist Church property off Tryon Road; the program serves up to 20 participants with three paid staff and two volunteers from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday—providing a safe place for life skills, physical activity and social interaction as they transition after high school.  Longview News-Journal
  • Over the past year, Longview nonprofits made significant changes in leadership, locations and programs as organizations like the Child Development Center relocated to a shared campus with Ware East Texas Montessori Academy—reducing costs while expanding childcare services. Other groups, including the Gregg County Historical Museum and Greater Longview United Way, marked milestones and launched new initiatives to better serve the community.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Longview ISD is moving forward with campus upgrades funded by a $456 million bond approved in May 2024 as projects like the new natatorium and career center move from design to construction amid rising costs. Pine Tree ISD is also advancing projects from its $55 million bond that include a nearly finished baseball field and new school additions set for completion by summer 2026—both districts aim to improve their school facilities.  Longview News-Journal
