EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Gregg County Historical Museum launched its U.S.S. (Underwater Science and Subs) Summer Camp on Tuesday, June 24 for junior explorers ages 8-13, where campers learned about sea life by sculpting clay sea monsters and studying nautical archaeology. The week will finish on Friday with a field trip to Lake Cherokee for an up-close look at a submarine.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Henderson County Jail in Athens launched an educational program in early June that gives inmates tablets with courses—covering GED, job skills, and parenting—to help them improve and reduce reoffending. Sheriff Botie Hillhouse said more than 2,234 inmates have already completed short courses as the program aims to steer them toward better choices for the future.  KETK
  • After a rough spring with pothole reports and weather problems, Longview restructured its street repairs—reassigning four employees and doubling asphalt use from 850 to 1,700 tons—to clear the backlog, and the asphalt plant is now back in operation to support ongoing maintenance.  Longview News-Journal
