- ➤ Longview residents watched hot air balloon pilots compete Tuesday morning as they took off near Calvary Tabernacle on Hawkins Parkway to earn points in the U.S. Nationals Hot Air Balloon Championship at the Great Texas Balloon Race—its final year hosting the nationals. Organizers said pilots will fly at 6:30 a.m. daily through Sunday, weather permitting—Friday and Saturday festival events will continue if light rain falls. Longview News-Journal

- ➤ Smith County Road 2173 (also known as Carl Dowdy Road) near Paluxy southwest of Whitehouse is closed due to a culvert washout from heavy rains and will remain closed for about one month until the pipes are replaced. County officials ask residents to use alternate routes (updates available on the county website). KETK
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center said 110 dogs tested positive for heartworms through May and it expects to see as many or more cases as past years—267 in 2023 and 236 in 2024. Executive director Jenna George urged pet owners to use regular, year-round prevention to protect their dogs from the disease spread by mosquitoes in our hot, humid area. Longview News-Journal
