- ➤ Longview will host the Great Texas Balloon Race as hot air balloons take to the skies starting with practice flights on June 9 and competitive flights from June 10 through 15 while non-championship races run on the mornings of June 13 to 15. Families can join the festival at the Longview Convention Complex on June 13 and 14—featuring music from country singer Joe Nichols on June 14, vendors, and a balloon glow—while spectators watch pilots aim for designated landing zones. - ➤ The HERPS Exotic Reptile & Pet Show will run June 21-22 at the Longview Convention Complex & offer a variety of reptiles, amphibians, feeders, and exotic pets for sale along with educational displays for kids and adults. Food trucks will also be on site on both days. City of Longview
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Longview City Council will vote on appointing Greg Grimes as fire chief at its meeting on June 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Longview City Hall (300 W. Cotton St.), and Grimes brings over 25 years of fire service experience from his role as Assistant Chief of Operations in Allen. City of Longview
- ➤ Marshall High School graduate Juan “Armando” Minniefield traveled to Washington where he was named liaison to the ambassador for Equatorial Guinea to boost tourism, trade, and cultural ties. He said he aims to create opportunities in sports, entertainment, and food distribution — and he hopes to introduce the ambassador to business leaders in East Texas for potential investments. - ➤ The Longview City Council asked for more financial information on a proposed $35 million amphitheater off Estes Parkway near Interstate 20 during a work session on Thursday. Developers Jim Leslie and Steve Powers presented a plan that would let the city and county capture the first $4 million in property and sales tax revenue to help cover construction and infrastructure costs, and no action was taken at that meeting. - ➤ Overton baseball head coach Chris Cook led the Mustangs to the state championship game earlier this week and will leave to take over the struggling Jacksonville program—where the team ended last season with a 3—16 record.
