COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Texas Rangers Foundation supports youth baseball and softball by awarding grants to nonprofit programs in Tyler and Longview that serve children 18 and under — local organizations in Texas and nearby states must apply by June 27 at 6 p.m. The program has provided over $1,125,000 since 2012.  KETK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two incoming Tyler Junior College students received scholarships at the East Texas Leadership Summit held by the Hispanic Professionals Association of Tyler—Diego Castro from Tyler Legacy High will join the Texas A&M Engineering Academy this fall while Fernanda Palacios from Winnsboro High will begin a career in radiologic technology this summer.  KETK
  • Amy Dickson has been named the interim superintendent at Elysian Fields ISD after Monica Simmons resigned. She brings over 30 years of public education experience — with deep family ties to the district — and will begin her role Monday, June 9th.  KETK
  • Longview Public Library hosts Family Movie Day as part of its Summer Reading Club by showing Moana 2 (PG) on June 12 at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the Moeschle Meeting Room — free popcorn and drinks will be offered, and guests are advised to bring jackets if they get cold easily.  City of Longview

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • East Texans will see a change in air quality as dust from the Sahara drifts over the Atlantic and may lower visibility and turn the sun red. Texas A&M AgriLife Research professor Amarillo Brent Auvermann explained (the fine particles absorb water in high humidity and settle faster), and experts say the effects could last from a few days to almost a week.  KETK

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Many East Texans will use their air conditioners a lot this summer. Shawna Driggers from Kelly A/C and Heating said that keeping curtains closed and not turning off the unit when away will help keep homes cool and lower energy bills.  KETK
