- ➤ Renea Spurlock began her role as senior activity coordinator at Green Street Recreation Center in Longview in March and now aims to revive the center for its 105 members aged 55 and older. She plans new events such as trips, live music, and a Rangers game on June 19—she is also considering a fall festival, trunk-or-treat, and fashion show. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Blanca Amaro, a reference librarian at Kilgore Public Library, was honored at a city council meeting as she retired after 20 years of service. She boosted use for Hispanic families by starting bilingual story times, translating materials and organizing community events — including Christmas displays and the Haunted Library Basement. - ➤ Texas lawmakers wrapped up a 140-day session that approved a 25% raise for judges with increased legislator pensions, expanded the medical marijuana program by adding chronic pain and other conditions, raised film incentives to $300 million, limited campus protests, required sheriffs to work with ICE, and allowed builders to construct smaller homes on smaller lots—while proposals to regulate PFAS chemicals and cap personal injury claims did not pass.
