ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Longview police said a person died after being struck by a pickup truck on the 1600 block of Pine Tree Road Wednesday night at 10:36 p.m. when the victim failed to yield the right-of-way; the individual was taken to a local hospital and later died—officials have not released a name. KETK
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Longview’s Longfellows will present three debutantes (Miss Mary Frances McClure Dodson, Miss Blaire Marie Bodenheimer, and Miss Addison Grace Minshew) on May 31 at the organization’s 41st annual debutante ball. The debutantes have completed their freshman year of college and have been active in school and community activities. Longview News-Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Two bills raising homestead tax exemptions are headed to Governor Abbott’s desk for review and will go to voters in November, with Senate Bill 4 set to boost the exemption by $40,000 and Senate Bill 23 aiming to increase benefits for seniors and the disabled. Officials expect the changes could lower school district tax bills in East Texas—offering working families some much-needed relief. KETK
- ➤ Longview will have only one recycling option after Rivers Recycling will not rebuild its Kilgore facility that was destroyed in a fire in June 2024. Rivers Recycling President Jeff Craine said equipment costs—especially steel tariffs and technology expenses—and low recycling volumes led to the decision as Longview prepares to restart curbside recycling on June 2.
