EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kilgore College and Stephen F. Austin will sign a memorandum of understanding on May 15th at 3 p.m. at the McLaurin Administration Building to launch the Lumberjack Transfer Alliance that lets KC students co-enroll at SFA while earning their associate degrees. The agreement will offer benefits such as coordinated advising, recruitment events and a $500 transfer stipend—providing a smoother path to a four-year degree. Kilgore News Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Longview Mayor Kristen Ishihara said the City Council will hold a work session on June 5 at 5:30 p.m. to review a new proposal for funding a privately financed outdoor amphitheater at the I-20 and Estes Parkway intersection; developers (Jim Leslie and Steve Powers) estimated the project will cost nearly $35.3M and plan to let the city and county recoup the first $4M in tax revenue once it opens. - ➤ On May 5, the Texas House passed HB 2516 (Chris Larkin ALS Act), a bipartisan law that gives Texans under 65 with disabilities like ALS and end-stage renal disease affordable access to Medicare supplement plans. The law limits insurers to charging the same rates for basic plans or up to 200% for others and had strong support from lawmakers. Kilgore News Herald
