CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Community members gathered on Thursday at the Gregg County Courthouse lawn for National Day of Prayer (an annual event established in 1952) where local religious leaders led a reflective session for the nation. Longview News-Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The local library will hold a special story time on May 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the plaza where children ages 3-5 can enjoy activities, song, dance, and hear fun stories + see an ambulance display with guest storytellers from the Longview Fire Department and EMS team. City of Longview
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Jasmine Douglas at UT Health East Texas warned Friday, May 8 that kratom sold in local stores as a natural energy booster can quickly become addictive, especially when concentrated into potent extracts (which can mimic opioids). Texas law strictly limits these concentrates to keep consumers safe. Kilgore News Herald
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ On Friday, May 8 the New Diana Eagles completed their Class 3A playoff sweep of Gladewater with a 15-5 win at Pine Tree’s Pirate Field. Levi Green homered and Drew Cummings earned the pitching win as the team rallied from an early deficit. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Defending champion Spring Hill Panthers closed out their playoff series with a 5-2 win Friday. Eli Emery drove in runs in three different innings to lift the team to a 25-7-2 record. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Longview Lobo football will hold the annual Green/White Spring Game on Monday at Lobo Stadium—coach John King noted that 180 kids are practicing daily to help improve the team from last season. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Seven LeTourneau softball players earned All-SCAC honors on Friday, May 8 in its inaugural SCAC season — voted by league coaches and sports information directors. Award winners include Rylie Shipp, Jenna Carter, Maddie Flanery, Laynie Davis, Kylee Davis, Laila LaCapra and Taylor Gouge. Longview News-Journal
