- ➤ Callie Januario, a 7-year-old first grader at Hudson PEP Elementary, joined the nationwide Jr. Ranger Competition and needed community votes by 9 p.m. May 7 to advance in the National Wildlife Federation fundraiser—an effort to protect local wildlife. She hoped to win a $20,000 prize and an exclusive wildlife experience with conservationist Jeff Corwin. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ A new May/June calendar lists upcoming community events for East Texas, including the Strawberry Festival on May 9 at 108 E. Longview St. and Panther Palooza on May 16 in Bullard. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ White Oak officials said the city water's musty odor, caused by geosmin, has been nearly remedied with carbon treatment. City coordinator (Jimmy Purcell) noted the process began last week and the water should soon smell normal. Longview News-Journal
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Mason Barnes notched his tenth win as the Spring Hill Panthers defeated North Lamar 9 to 3 in Winnsboro on Thursday. The team now stands at 24-7-2 & will return tomorrow at 7 p.m. to try winning the best-of-three series. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Connor Cox, a senior from St. Edward's, earned first-team all-conference honors with strong statistics, and UT Tyler players along with the coaching staff were recognized following the regular season championship — the Lone Star Conference Tournament continues at Irwin Field. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Three Pine Tree soccer players ended their high school careers by signing college soccer deals at a ceremony at the Pirate Center on Wednesday, with Julian Ibarra signing with LeTourneau University and Martin Medrano and Ashlyn Tubbs joining Southwestern Adventist University in Keene. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Cumberland Academy — the longest chartered school in Smith County — announced it will leave UIL for TAIAO to give its student athletes more competitive opportunities while continuing to compete in UIL academic events. The change is intended to support student growth and success through a new athletic program. Longview News-Journal
