- ➤ Shirley Griffin was honored Tuesday at Pinecrest Country Club as Rotary Club of Longview’s Citizen of the Year for raising over $1 million to support polio vaccination worldwide (she is a polio survivor who has volunteered since 1995). Longview News-Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ LeTourneau University freshman civil engineering students tested their bridge-building skills in a live load test Tuesday at the campus pond. Guided by Professor Darryl Low, small teams built bridges using basic materials and were graded on cost-to-weight-to-failure ratios (a challenge that rewards both strength and economy). - ➤ Caden Hawkins, a Hallsville oil field worker detained in Mexico for over a year (since March 2025), returned home yesterday after state rep Jay Dean and national authorities secured his release. He was misdirected into holding in Ciudad Juarez while en route from Tempe. Longview News-Journal

- ➤ Visitors can drive through Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari in Jacksonville where they feed exotic animals like zebras and camels along a 4-mile scenic trail. Operating for over 20 years, the 300-acre park offers a family-friendly outing for local residents. Longview News-Journal

- ➤ Kilgore College softball ended its 2026 season on Tuesday with two losses to Paris (14-6 and 9-8) at The Ballpark at KC Commons and a 15-41 overall record. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Kyle Curlee from Longview won the KYKX Big Bass Bonanza fishing tournament on Sunday afternoon at Lake O’ the Pines, landing an 8.028-pound bass to capture over $64,000 in prizes — he will be honored with the Champion's ring next year at Patterson Nissan's Champions Dinner. - ➤ East Texas area golfers competed in the UIL Girls State Golf Tournament held May 4 – 5. The events took place at TPC San Antonio, Legacy Hills, Legends Golf Course, Jimmy Clay, Lions Municipal, and Crystal Falls, with teams and individuals earning area medals and high rankings.
