COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Since the city's spay, neuter and microchip ordinance went into effect over a year ago (Feb. 1 to mid-April), Longview animal control helped 141 households comply with the rules, made nearly 700 calls, returned 217 microchipped animals, and provided resources for pet owners.  Longview News-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local guides offer boat tours of Caddo Lake, showcasing a historic tea room and 27,000 acres of bald cypress forest while visitors learn about the lake’s natural beauty and history; trips begin from marinas like Johnson's Ranch Marina and cost $40 per adult.  Longview News-Journal
  • Jefferson Historical Museum confirmed a genuine 6-foot sketch by British artist John Constable after high-tech tests and is set for auction in Dallas on June 5 with an estimated price up to 500,000 dollars. The museum expects most of the funds will help update exhibits.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Leverett’s Chapel ISD established its own police department to boost student safety; Chief Gary Guthrie was officially approved on Tuesday, April 28. The new unit is designed to ensure faster response times on campus.  Kilgore News Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • White Oak Ladynecks advanced to the regional semifinals after beating the Atlanta Lady Rabbits 11-9 on Monday in the decisive playoff game. They will face Whitesboro in future games on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Lone Oak.  Longview News-Journal
  • LeTourneau baseball lost 10-5 to Concordia Texas in the SCAC Tournament championship at La Moderna Field on Monday afternoon; the YellowJackets fought back early but ultimately fell as Concordia pulled ahead with key runs to secure an NCAA berth.  Longview News-Journal
  • Carthage Bulldogs earned a 4-1 win in the deciding playoff game on Tuesday after Conrad Shahan pitched a no-hitter against the Van Vandals. Carthage will play Sunnyvale (starting Thursday at 7 p.m.) in Lindale in a best-of-three series.  Longview News-Journal
